MCM: From Skwatta Kamp to the Balcony, Slikour is an Icon Living

You may not know him as Siya Metane, but he definitely is one of SA Hip Hop’s biggest names. Folks born after 2000 may know him as the guy that pop up on rappers backstage at the Metros or the SAHHAs, or as the guy who interviews artists on balconies and once had a feud with Stogie T. But if you were born before the millennium you must know that Slikour represents much more than that to the Mzansi music industry.

The hip hop legend recently launched his self titled memoir to much fanfare from industry mates, friends and fans alike.

The rapper who has spent the better part of the last decade making sure SA artists are handed their flowers also deserves to be handed his flowers as much as anybody else, and that is what Hip Hop Africa is doing today.

The pioneer member of the legendary Hip Hop group Skwatta Kamp, Siyabonga Themba Metane was born in Leondale, Johannesburg on the 13th of April, 1981.

The 42-year-old rapper and entrepreneur began his career with the seven-man hip hop pioneer group Skwatta Kamp in the late 90s. He would later go on to become the most well known member of the group even after they went on a hiatus.

They recorded and released four albums before they parted ways in 2009. The group’s Magnum Opus came in 2003 with the release of ‘Mkhukhu Funkshen.’ It sold over 25,000 copies and received several award nominations.

Other well known Skwatta Kamp projects are their debut ‘Khut En Joyn’ in 2002 and the follow up to ‘Mkhukhu Funkshen’—’Washumkhukhu.’

Their fusion of hip hop and Kwaito laden with South African township slangs and the experiences of Kasi dwellers on these and other projects helped propel them to the top of the SA music industry as some of the biggest and most influential acts of the early 2000s alongside acts like Teargas and Tumi & The Volume.

After The Kamp, Slikour released his first solo album, ‘Ventilation Mixtape Vol. 1,‘ in 2005, to massive critical and commercial appraisal, followed by the second installment ‘Ventilation Mixtape Vol. 2’ two years later, with the third volume coming in 2010.

There are quite a few toys in Slikour’s award cabinet, including a plaque for Best Hit Single from the 2008 Metros etc.

During the 2009 Global Fresh Collective campaign (GFC) of SAB Miller— an innitiative that gathers innovative thinkers from various parts of the world who are passionate about upcoming talents, music, and other creative subjects— Slikour had the privilege of representing South Africa.

Asides his music career, Slikour is also a serial entrepreneur he owns the online entertainment and media platform SLIKOUR ONLIFE, featuring it’s famous Balcony Interviews and Backyard Sessions where he has interviewed some of the biggest names in SA Music past and present; from Stogie T, Priddy Ugly, A-Reece, the late AKA to the legendary Zola 7.

Since 2002, Metane has also been co-owner of the prominent artist management organisation and record label Buttabing Entertainment, which was responsible for launching the careers of so many big names in SA hip hop including Kwesta and Yanga Chief etc.

Slikour’s YouTube channel boasts of more than 62,000 subscribers, and his Instagram account over 176,000 followers.

Before his participation in the celebrity dance reality show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in 2015, Slikour was co-host or eTV’s dance reality show ‘Step Up or Step Out’ in 2013.

The rapper is married to the beautiful Wilkinson since 2017, after dating since 2013 and they have a child by name Shaka Anathi Metane, although both Melissa and Metane have children from previous relationships

With the release of his memoir and the return of Skwatta Kamp to active music, Slikour doesn’t seem like he is done with success quite yet.

Dilo Tlhakana: A Township Story of Hustle & Hope

Bugzito, real name Tshepo Bakang Seagiso, is a man who wears many hats and I’m not talking about the bucket hats he frequently sports on our tv screens. He is a rapper and established actor, having found a home in Mzansi Magic’s nail-gripping soapie, The River as Charlie back in 2019.

With his on-screen career taking flight, landing him multiple roles in various shows, Seagiso made the time to hone another passion of his. He fell in love with music at an early age, listening to the likes of Molemi, Zola, Tupac, and various Kwaito artists who fueled his creativity to try his hand at rapping.

His musical influences, despite their mainstream success, were known to tackle societal issues that not many artists dared to speak of.

This spoke to Bugzito, who in his music, narrates real-life matters that connect him to his listeners. It was then that he began dabbling in the rap style dubbed Sprakathi, Pretoria slang for “conversion.”

Dilo Tlhakana, sitting at 17 tracks long with features from the likes of Skillo and Marcus Harvey, is heavily influenced by Kwaito.

It highlights Bugzito’s trials and triumphs, from personal struggles to the hardships of independence and finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, with some lighthearted moments in between.

“It’s a combination of street anthems, high energy beats, slow groove accompanied by self-introspective storytelling mostly narrated through the Pitori Rap Style, Sprakathi,” explains Noma Ndlovu.

Dilo Tlhakana speaks of hope and ultimate victory, that no matter what struggles you may face, dilo tlhakana in the end.

J. Cole Confirms New Album on Summer Walker’s EP

It’s been 24 months since the last J. Cole solo studio album, 14 months since a project with J.Cole featuring prominently (D-Day Mixtape) and save for a slew of guest verses here and there, Jermaine’s fans have been starving for way too long. But there’s good news, Cole was recently featured on two songs— while he gave a stellar verse to Lil Durk on his Billboard Hot 100 top 5 song ‘All My Life,’ out focus is on the less known feature on Summer Walker’s brand new EP.

‘1985,’ the final song on Cole’s April 2018 album, is subtitled ‘(Intro to “The Fall Off”).’

Due to this, fans and conspiracy theorists alike began speculating The Fall Off must be the title the next Cole album.

Six days after KOD’s release, the ‘Middle Child’ rapper confirmed in a tweet that he was indeed working on an album titled ‘The Fall Off.’

This would make ‘1985’ the album’s intro and lead single.

In a now famous interview with Power 105’s Angie Martinez in May 2018, Cole stated that his December 2016 singles, ‘False Prophets‘ and ‘Everybody Dies,’ were originally songs from ‘The Fall Off,’ and they just might end up on the final tracklist.

On November 1, 2019, during his headlining show at the inaugural Day N Vegas Music Festival, Cole announced that ‘The Fall Off’ would be released in 2020 after failing to drop that year, only appearing on the Dreamville collaborative album.

On July 20, 2020, J. Cole published an essay titled “The Audacity” on the Players’ Tribune, in which he discussed several critical periods of his life and the persistent obligation within himself to achieve his goals.

He also mentioned how personal events in 2016 had been a precursor to this album, writing:

The next day, J.Cole announced the release of the album’s first two singles, ‘The Climb Back’ and ‘Lion King on Ice,’ but he also made it clear that the album was still nowhere near finished.

The songs dropped on the evening of the 22nd as a two-songs pack titled ‘Lewis Street,’ named after the rapper’s childhood neighborhood, made all too familiar to Come fans through references over several songs in Cole’s catalogue.

However, ‘The Climb Back‘ would Later find a permanent home on ‘The Off-Season.”

On December 29, 2020, Cole reignited anticipation for ‘The Fall Off’ when he posted a schedule of what he deemed “The Fall Off Era.”

The calendar began with two completed events, Cole’s famous feature run between 2018-20 and 2019’s ‘Revenge of the Dreamers III,’ followed by ‘The Off-Season,’ which was eventually released in May 2021.

The calendar however listed ‘It’s a Boy’ and the release of ‘The Fall Off’ as the final move for the North Carolina emcee, giving rise to retirement rumours amongst fans.

Fast forward two years after ‘The Off-Season,’ Dreamvillains have been waiting for a Cole solo project to no avail, but a glimmer of hope has surfaced on the Dreamville horizon— in the form of an unlikely appearance, on the intro to Summer Walker’s brand new EP ,on a song titled ‘To Summer, From Cole.’

Reminiscent of his uplifting poem about self-acceptance at the end of Logic’s ‘AfricAryaN,’ Cole served an audio hug to the mother of two and lended a shoulder to lean on, but it gets more interesting on the line after he congratulates her on the birth of her second child.

I’m thinkin’ about ya, I heard you just had you another lil baby/ congratulations, I hope you got through it with no complications/ I find it amazing, the way that you juggle your kids, the biz, the fame, the bitches that’s hatin’/ They sit around waiting for you to fall off like the album I’m making,” he raps.

This has confirmed that he is indeed working on the album and fans might not be wrong to think a release date will be announced soon.

As far as what the album theme will be, we can only assume it may revolve around fatherhood and will deal with a lot of emotions (Cole being an emcee known for making music about the particular stage of life he currently is at the time the album was made.)

There, is where we deduce our clue from, elsewhere on his verse he rapped:

“Session 32 bring me to tears, be getting chocked up when I hear it/ Seem like I keep crying off so much since a n**a had these kids/ And I don’t know what it is that makes me so sensitive, more than I already was.”

Do you think we are getting ‘The Fall Off’ soon, and do you think Cole will retire after this album?

Let us know your thoughts.

Cheque has been rampantly making content to promote his new single and one of them landed him in trouble, yet again.

A video surfaced with Cheque in a car, scrolling through pictures of female celebrities he desires to be his “Sunflawa,” on his phone.
