Welcome To #MassCountry

It’s a bittersweet day for the megacy as we welcome the much anticipated Mass Country in AKA’s absence.

Following his tragic passing, Kiernan Forbes’ friends, family, and fans have kept his spirit alive and prepared for the album’s release after about 2 years of production. Ahead of the drop, we were given a taste of what Mass Country would sound like with the Nasty-C-assisted Lemons (Lemonade) that was released last year to critical acclaim.

AKA followed up months later with Prada featuring Motswako trailblazer, Khuli Chana, slowly shaping listeners’ perception of the project but it was Company with Kiddominant that made Mass Country an album to look forward to.

The project is sample-rich, with the Supa Mega effortlessly switching between rapping and his popular auto-tuned singing style. The album’s opener, Last Time, which was used in the Mass Country trailer, helps set the tone for the album. The subsequent songs are upbeat club bangers where AKA and the diverse mixture of featured artists bring life to the project.

A missing A-Reece appearance sparked some controversy between the slimes and the megacy, with many blaming arrogance and poor management on the Paradise rapper’s part which ultimately lead to a missed opportunity.

Despite Reece’s absence, Thato Saul represented Pretoria in Mbuzi (Freestyle) and was praised for being part of the project.

Crown, with Emtee and Manana, was a certified hit in everybody’s minds the moment the album’s tracklist was revealed and rings true to possibly being the next single. In between flexing his bands and designer threads, AKA shows off his love interest in Sponono, Paradise, and the r-rated Blxckie and Nadia Nakai-assisted Dangerous where the two lovers trade verses about their romance and intimate moments.

A song that’ll have many people talking is Diary (Anxiety) where the vulnerable rapper speaks of his relationship with his late fiancé, Anele Tembe. The couple’s tumultuous relationship was short-lived, AKA unveils some of their highs and lows, including Tembe’s untimely passing and the aftermath thereof. “How you gon’ cap and not even make one phone call to my mom and my dad after we poured the sand on the casket?”

Overall, the album is worth listening to and has some notable highlights that we’ll surely be hearing all around us soon. Be sure to give it a listen and tell us what you think.

MagleraDoeBoy Shares The Suns Song Music Video

I remember just before his debut album dropped, MagleraDoeBoy shared that it would be titled Diaspora. Because of the name, my mind took me to Solo & The Betr Gang’s Tour Dates album concept that featured artists from around the country including HHP, pH Raw-X, and Rouge. Thinking he’d follow a similar theme.

As it turned out, my assumptions were wrong but not entirely. In the album, MDB tells the African story, from black history to his own experiences and he’s helped by the likes of 25K and soul singer, KayGizm.

In many of his songs and verses, MDB talks about having to navigate through the rough township that is his home, Klerksdorp, this song is no different. The Suns Song quickly became a personal favorite of mine from the album at first listen, because it sounds nothing like the rest of the songs. Cryson Tiller, as he jokingly calls his singer alter ego, narrates the story of his childhood.

“My nickname when I sing I’d Cryson Tiller ’cause I cry.”

Mama, ngithi today ha se maobane (mama, I said today is not yesterday), but today could change kaosane (tomorrow).

Being born and raised in a township, it is easy for young children to be influenced by a life of crime as well as street culture. In the song, the Makazana rapper questions why he was placed where he was, to see what he saw, and seldom participate in some not-so-lawful activities. He spoke more about his past, present, and future in the latest episode of The Sobering Podcast (watch below).

The cinematic visuals take us through a township where DoeBoy interacts with the individuals in the video while also performing the song. The Maloney Mzonke-directed film travels across various locations, continuously transitioning from full color to black and white – courtesy of Nic Apostoli. MDB makes a promise to his mom that they will “make it out of Makazana even if it’s the last thing he does.”

The song ends with an audio of a lady explaining the topic of the Mitochondrial Eve (the “Eve gene”). “Black women are actually the manifestation of God.”

”We Never Die We Multiply,” Remembering Riky Rick’s Legacy

Today, one year ago South African Hip Hop lost one of it’s most enigmatic and talented figures; the talented and very fashionable Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado, most commonly known as Riky Rick, Boss Zonke or King Kontini. The renegade rapper, songwriter, producer, music executive and entrepreneur took his own life on the 22nd of February 2022.

Riky Rick rose to super stardom with the release of his smash hit ‘Boss Zonke’ in 2015,which followed his debut single ‘Nafukwa’ which was in it’s own right a minor hit. Both songs were taken off his debut studio album ‘Family Values.’

However what most people don’t know is that before the fame that came with ‘Boss Zonke’ Riky dipped his foot into the music industry in 2009 and 2010, when he dropped mixtapes such as The Comeback Kid and Last Summer with Da L.E.S.

He was also the founder and owner of record label Cotton Club Records and a member of Boyz N Bucks, a hip hop collective.

Makhado was also an entrepreneur and a music executive who gave several opportunities to many artists to shoot them into the limelight. Almost every rapper in the SA hip hop industry has a ‘Riky Rick Story,’ that is how much of a legacy Kontini left behind.

Most famously Makahado helped launch the career of teenage hypeman, dancer and internet sensation Uncle Vinny, when he employed Vinny to be the official hypeman at Cottonfest, the festival Makhado started to showcase the various hip hop talents in the SA industry.

R&B and Hip Hop Singer Tshego said in a interview on the Rea & Blvck Steph Podcast that Riky Rick helped him get off drugs, Riky also called Costa Titch and gave him a free verse on a remix of his breakout single ‘Nkalakatha, which went a long way in starting his music career.

Before the beef between Makhado and Cassper Nyovest, he loaned Cassper money in millions to be able to host his concert #FillupFNBStadium in 2017.

When A-Reece left Ambitiouz entertainment, brands, booking managers and artists were reluctant to work with him in order not to incur the wraath of Ambitiouz. Riky Rick helped re-launch his career after putting Reece on his song ‘Pick You Up,’ paid for the video and all the costumes, then performing the song with Reece at Cottonfest that year. Sinc ehtne Reece became an annual regular at Cottonfest.

Makhado left behind a wife Bianca Naidoo, son Maik Daniel, step daughter Jordan, a huge music legacy, several smash hits and a huge catalogue of classic verses and don’t forget his metro FM 2016 award speech, where he urged young artists to ignore radio because of payola and focus on the internet, before being cut off.

As fans gather at Newtown, Johannesburg to celebrate the late legend today at the Cottonfest remembrance event, hip hop Africa sends our condolences and share this amazing playlist with fans of Boss Zonke.

Enjoy our Riky Rick exclusive playlist below, REST IN PEACE KING RIKY. WE NEVER DIE WE MULTIPLY.

Nota Baloyi Claims He Knew Sim Dope Before AKA

0

Mzansi hip hop fans only know the name Sim Dope based off an AKA song of the same name, any rap fan you ask about Sim Dope they’ll tell you he was one of AKA’s childhood friends. Controversial label exec and public figure Nota Baloyi in an interview with DJ Sbu claimed that he knew Sim Dope before AKA met him.

Nota claims that he went to the same primary school with Sim Dope in Mpumalanga while AKA and Sim Dope met at St. John’s high school in Johannesburg. He even explained how Sim Dope got the scar on his face.

“Sim dope got that scar in primary school while climbing a tree with me. I. was climbing a tree with him and he climbed higher than me and he fell. At Radford house, a boutique primary school.

“Before Kiernan ever met sim dope, I was in primary school with SimDope. He went to get his stitches and after the second break, he was back in school. That’s sim dope.” Nota said.

Nota also stated that Andile Mpisane is not rich compared to Sim Dope. “Sim dope had a soccer team at 16.  Today we talk about Andile Mpisane’s being chairmans in their 20s. Sim Dop was doing that while he was still in high school in Mpumalanga.”

Nota Baloyi also acknowledged Sim Dope’s posh upbringing. “He was one of those privileged kids whose father had worked so hard at the upper epilogue of business. He is the owner of the Lions. The first black owner of a rugby team. He was still the most humble person and that’s why Kiernan had to honour him.”

Sim Dope, whose real name is Simphiwe Gumede only gained massive public recognition at AKA’s memorial service where he gave a heartfelt tribute to the late rapper. Finally fans could put a face to the name they heard on the song named after him in 2014.

Simphiwe Gumede is the son of Billionaire businessman Robert Gumede who is also the first black owner of a Rugby team in South Africa. He is the owner of the Golden Lions Rugby Union.

Ambitiouz Entertainment Unveil their Top 6 AKA Guest Verses

0

Good rappers make great songs, but great rappers make great songs, great projects and the best rappers take it up a notch by bodying every feature request they get. The late Kiernan Forbes was apart from his great projects also known for his numerous classic guest verses. Ambitiouz entertainment following the untimely demise of the Cape Town born emcee released their list of favourite AKA guest verses.

6. Heaven- Da LES ft. AKA and Maggz

Kontrol had just dropped in 2013 and AKA was the most sough after feature artist in the country at the time, Northgod Da LES tapped Supa Mega before his Supa Mega days and Maggz for this psychedelic, trippy hit, fans will definitely remember the all white video with so much smoke and girls in wolf masks, featuring Mega with his 22 Karat gold tooth rapping a classic verse and dropping that classic hook.

“This don’t take no days off I put my plan in motion, your swag is broken These songs I’m making got this nation under mass hypnosis.”

5. Hape Le Hape- Khuli Chana ft. AKA, Zeus and Reason

The ‘Hape le hape’ series was so good that A-Reece before blowing up wanted nothing more in the world than to be featured on one of the numerous remixes, and expressed his frustrations on a freestyle how Kiernan got the spot he wanted so bad.

”Every time I’m spitting they say this shit is God given
Nobody been official as me in a hard minute
There’s plenty of other fish in the sea
But I can get Christopher Reeves out of his seat when I’m finished
I once heard that Motswako was the family tree
Now we raking the leaves plus raising our seeds
Trust it P H Raw X on the beat”

4. God’s Will- DJ Vigilante, K.O. and AKA

Before DJ Vigilante was known as Vigi, before Mzansi was debating who had the best verse between K.O and AKA on ‘Run Jozi’ and ‘Bang out,’ God’s Will began the healthy rivalry between the two.

When it comes to desire, they say the sky is the limit When it comes to lines of design, messiah image Big dreams, tunnel vision is pristine.”

3. Lie 2 Me- Ma-E ft. AKA

Kiernan’s trappy new school flow on former Teargas member Ma-E’s ‘Lie 2 Me’ takes the number 3 spot on Ambitiouz’ list.

”Come take a seat in my living room
Come take a peek at a better view
If you taking aim, you better shoot
I got more trophies than tennis shoes
You experts
With your guess work
Talk a whole lotta number 2
You got a thirst for forbidden fruit
Family first that’s the golden rule”

2. The Saga- Anatii ft. AKA

Before they had a beef, then went on to make a whole collab album together and give SA the best collab hip hop album ever, their history of working together started on this song.

Supa Mega wasn’t lying when he said ”i’m the reason they put the saga on repeat” on ‘Composure.’

”Always had the dream that I would be the Supa Mega
On my second album but they treat me like a legend
Listen to my old shit, that’s my only pressure
City where the gold is, that’s the Holy Mecca
You can get the money, you can never buy taste
Take a sip of my name, split the side grave
Niggas talking beef shit wanna braai vleis
Why you smoking cheap shit? this is high grade
I think this mami got potential
I think this molly got me busting out the friendzone
Drop it in the champagne like a Mentos
We in the lobby but your body is a temple”

1. Roll Up- Emtee ft. Wizkid and AKA

”I’m catching flights when niggas catch emotions, these flashing lights will make you loose your focus, that’s the reason I’m so anti-social, season after season cheese at my disposal”

Ambitiouz entertainment was launched with the release of it’s premier artist at the time, Emtee’s debut single ‘Roll Up.’ The song was a national radio success but the remix featuring Nigerian superstar Wizkid and the above AKA verse was a continental success. It’s only right hat this verse takes number one spot on their list.
