Cassper Nyovest has been focused on his philanthropic endeavors and growing his business that his fans are left to wonder if they’ll ever hear any new music from him.
Just this past month, Cassper, real name Refiloe Phoolo collaborated with the QVDB Foundation and Generosity Water to open a well at the Sol Plaatjie Primary School – helping in aiding water scarcity in his hometown.
Before then, Nyovest appeared in Talib Kweli and Madlib’s Liberation 2, seemingly partnered with Vth Season, and has been enjoying life while also promoting his alcoholic beverage, Billiato. As he appears to have a lot on his plate, rest assured that the fresh prince of Maftown hasn’t forgotten about the music.
At the top of April, Cassper and his trusted producer, Alie Keys visited a remote location with non-other than Klerksdorp emcee, MagleraDoeBoy to make music away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Seeing that both hail from the North West, fans were hoping for a collaboration between the rappers which seems to have materialized.
But that’s not all. Cassper is looking to deliver some quality music and went on to recruit one of SA’s finest producers.
Tweezy has had a phenomenal career through the years, collaborating with SA Hip Hop heavyweights like AKA, Riky Rick, as well as Cassper in his 2020 album, Any Minute Now.
The two linked up recently for a studio session, one that Tweezy described as a “classic.” Sharing photos on his Instagram page, Cassper was in the zone preparing music with Tweezy by his side. “This one is for the books 🎶,” captioned the Family Tree CEO, fueling his fans’ excitement over what is expected to be something unforgettable.

Finally the long-awaited video of Nigerian Hip-hop artiste PsychoYP performing his hit song “Stronger” has been released.
The video the star teased on his social media page a few days ago is now officially out.
The visuals see Psycho YP and his featured guest Zlatan enjoying the aura of a local ghetto somewhere in Lagos. PsychoYP had his braids pink as he shows off his tenacity and intricate style and drip.
The APEX record rapper who is joined by his colleague Zlatan shared this beautiful video of the song which is produced by a multitalented hip-hop producer, Jaylon in the earlier hours of today.
This comes from the success of his recent project YPSZN3. The rapper has definitely not shown any sign of stopping anytime soon.
While we enjoy all of his recordings so far and hope he keeps churning out these records, we can not also stop looking forward to what he has in store for us in future.
The growth of Nigerian rapper, songwriter, and performer Dremo has been a very interesting journey so far. From being just a neighbourhood hero to becoming mainstream in Nigeria. The rapper has been able to do well for himself so far in an industry where rappers are not as rated as their singer colleagues.
DREMO: IN THE BEGINNING
The rapper who was a student of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) before he got signed into DMW in 2016 has been quite consistent with his craft over the years.
Dremo started in the City ofIbadan, where he will later get his first record deal with APPE, a label co-owned by “Sir Banko”, the former road manager to popular Nigerian singer Davido and the current Sony Music Africa head, and Debo Ogundele (currently a speaker in the Oyo state house of assembly).
While signed to APPE, Dremo released hit songs such as normal levels and the more popular record “OBT“. Songs that got a relative level of airplay on the radio then.
Fast forward to 2016, Dremo will get signed to Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), alongside his colleague, MayorKun. Immediately after signing to DMW, Dremo released his viral single Fela, a cover to American rapper and Kanye West’s signee Designer’sPanda.
Not so surprisingly, Fela (A song that eulogizes the music legend Fela Kuti) became a national tune, getting massive airplay on the radio and becoming a hit on the streets as well.
The rapper will then proceed to release his first official single on the label, Ojere. Although before releasing this fine tune, he had featured on the label’s first collaborative single “Back to Back” where he was joined by label boss Davido, Mayorkun, and his APPE colleague Ichaba.
Ojere will later become a hit song, getting massive airplay both on Radio and TV. The music video for Ojere was shot in Lagos and the Sahara of Dubai, as he can be heard rapping “Asare lo Dubai emi Banko ati OBO”.
After the success recorded with Ojere, Dremo proceeded to release his first collaborative effort with label boss Davido on “1 2 Bang”. A song that performed fairly on the charts and enjoyed heavy rotation on TV as well. The visuals for “1 2 Bang” was shot in Ghana, featuring scenes that highlighted the two having a good time while on holiday.
In 2017, Dremo was invited to the popular Coke studio to do a remake of his hit single “Ojere” with South African house music stars, Mafikizolo and Nyashinski. They went ahead to perform the new remake on one of the episodes in the Coke Studio of 2017. The remake was well received and even went ahead to gain the rapper’s new listening demography.
BODY OF WORKS
Fast forward to 2018, Dremo dropped his first body of work “CNV1“. A project that was critically acclaimed for its delivery, production, and general artistry. On the record, Dremo came bearing gifts as he could be heard bouncing up and down on the various instrumentals that featured on the project.
The promotional single “Nobody“, is a remake of Legendary street rapper, Reminisce’s “Ajigijaga“. On Nobody, Dremo shares in detail the entirety of his come-up story. From his childhood to getting his first record deal, which he signed right in his father’s home, to formerly being a producer, to coming to the city of dreams, Lagos, and even to how he got duped by a promoter. Dremo left nothing unsaid.
When you wonder what Dremo’s come-up story was, just listen to Nobody.
However, the “rapper Wey dey sing song” as he is popularly referred to has continued to grow and evolve. The rapper made his first singing debut on “Kpa“, a record off “CNV1“. On Kpa the rapper was assisted by his label boss, Davido who did the chorus.
Kpa has gone ahead to become the Rapper’s most streamed single on all streaming platforms. Warranting the question, “Is rap really dead in Nigeria?” Dremo is good with wordplays, his punchlines are rock solid, and he is signed to a prominent label but yet people will rather have him sing than rap.
However, over the last couple of years, Dremo has continued to horn his crown both as a rapper and a singer. He has dropped a second installment of his heavily talked about “CNV“, the project featured songs like Mabel with Davido, Konjinaba with Naira Marley, Who’s your guy?, Sharp Sharp with Falz, and a lot of other classics.
COLLABORATIONS
In 2021 he released a collaborative EP with Eastern rapper, Jeriq. The project had a total of 5 songs and ran for about 16min. On dropping the project, it got to the No.1 position of the highly revered Nigeria Apple music chart and got critical acclaim as well.
As a singer, he worked on “Confam” with Simi and has continued to create iconic sounds that will influence the culture if proper attention should be put to him.
One thing for sure is that Dremo deserves more than he gets, what or who is to blame we can not categorically say, but we can only hope that the future holds more for the super-talented rapper.
Nigerian young star rapper Psycho YP has teased the visuals to his 2022 hit single “Stronger” with Zlatan.
This collaboration which was probably unexpected considering the broad difference between the two stars has done well since its release in October of 2022.
While Psycho YP is more of a west-side rapper, Zlatan is the new school king of the street possessing a massive listenership from around the globe.
The song which has performed averagely well on Charts across Nigeria is now geared towards another push with the visual set to drop tomorrow.
The two iconic duos who are both of Nigerian descent are obviously born to entertain with their various styles, while Zlatan appeal to all classes of Nigerians, YP appeals more to be rich-just came back from Yankee set of Nigerians.
The song which was released just after his international collaborative effort “Ic3” with BackRoadGeeand ZillaOaks.
It was also rumored recently that there seems to be a collaboration in the works coming from Psycho YP and MAVIN-signed superstar Ayra Starr. While we look forward to that, let’s enjoy the Stronger video set to drop tomorrow.
The Nigerian rap scene has experienced a lot of different phases. From being a scene full of Yankee wannabee rappers to finally finding a way to infuse Afrobeats into Hip-hop and of course finally being a beautiful sight to behold. One thing for sure is Reminisce, Olamide, and Phyno are legends.
However, during one of the many stages of its evolution, there was a time when the scene was completely filled up by rappers who infused their indigenous languages into Hip-hop to make a bop.
The Trio of Olamide, Reminisce and Phyno had the scene on total lockdown. In fact, for any rapper to score a hit it was necessary that he first had the blessings of either one of them, either by getting a verse or just having them be cool with you.
It was during that period when Olamide signed fellow young rapper, Lil Kesh, while Phyno was dominating the whole of the charts with his eastern Nigeria-infused Igbo. Reminisce on the other hand was busy scoring hits and killing both his features and collaborations.
During this period the trio scored countless hit singles that were enough to score a 5hr performance for either of them easily.
This led to the conviction that the mainstream (The more opulent) side of Hip-hop was no longer as important and obviously did not have as much followership as the street rap scene. Leading to numerous conspiracy theories about the two identical yet very different sides of the Nigerian Hip-hop scene.
Several accusations and ideas were spread all over social media, with some debating that Olamide and M.I. who was on the side of the opulent had issues and had various clashes. News that neither of them commented on.
Local Rapper
However, the whole drama was further aggravated when Olamide and Phyno linked up with Reminisce to release “Local Rapper” off his 2015 album “Baba Hafusa”.
The record became very controversial, further pushing the narrative that the rap scene in Nigeria was divided in two.
On Local Rapper, they all take their turns to explain why street rap has taken over and why mainstream, English wordplay rap is no longer highly sorted, and why they the ones considered to be local are the ones raking in the doe.
The raps, flow, lyrical delivery, and production on Local Rapper are world-class, no surprise they all went in hard and delivered their various verses. Their various braggadocious lines on the record are one to be proud of, especially because they are all very talented and could spit.
The video that followed also highlighted the lives of the street. Showing off what they came from in grand style and with galore. There has been no better way to clap back at the press and keep people talking than what the trio did.
However, the talks of their existing beef between the street rappers and the English spitting rappers soon died after Vector a mainstream rapper did a remix to his hit single “King Kong” and had Phyno and Reminisce as some of the featured stars on the remix.
Looking back at the hip-hop story in Nigeria, we can only be grateful it never got physical because the punchlines and references used to be very direct and intense.
We’d keep gunning for the top and hope that the rap scene gets back to being heated up.
The Big Hash is back on the streets and fans finally get to hear his latest single featuring some of SA Hip Hop’s beloved emcees.
That’s Wassup was initially released as a visualizer and is officially out for all to jam to. Featuring Thato Saul, ZRi, YoungstaCpt, and Tyson Sybateli, the gang breaks bread while exchanging stories of their lives before notoriety and how it all turned out for them.
Back in November 2022, The Big Hash released his debut album, Better Late Than Never. The project featured the likes of Blxckie and FLVME and was a way for the young rapper to reclaim his former glory.
YoungstaCpt is on an impressive musical run with his recent drops. On the heels of Bacc To The Kaap with Stilo Magolide, the Kaapstad Naaier officially delivers visuals for Benni McCarthy.
Shot by Mzi Xander in Hanover Park, the Cape Town emcee mirrors the often disputed Manchester United coach and raises the team’s flag high in his honor.
“This is what a failure looks like,” said Benni McCarthy in an interview speaking of being doubted throughout his career.
The visual includes clips from McCarthy’s time as a footballer. We also see a group of kids raging to the song and YoungstaCpt paying tribute to AKA with a video beside the late rapper, as well as Riky Rick with a Cotton Fest football.
