K.O. States Why He is to Blame for Not Getting His Flowers

Veteran South African rapper Ntokozo Mdluli, popularly known as K.O, did a pit stop at the UK Podcast Drinks with Noms in London, for an interview, in the midst of his UK Tour. Amongst other things discussed was Mr. Cash time’s legacy, which the host pointed out that a lot of people so not give K.O his due recognition for his contributions to the SA rap culture and music industry as a whole, as opposed to some other of his colleagues.

The Polokwane-born rapper stated that although his fans have love for him and he is not complaining about the reception, it is still true a lot of people always take him to the back seat when discussing SA hip hop hierarchies, and he believes he partly to blame for it.

“I’ve never done just the K.O concert back home like where it’s like okay, this is specifically if you walk through those doors you are solely going in there to see this man,” he stated. “My peers have done that, you’re talking about Cassper Nyovest, even AKA and all those kinds of people. I’ve never done that.”

He is referring to Cassper and Kiernan being the two biggest and most influential South African rappers of the last decade, due to their musical releases, collaborations, beef and concerts— the latter especially propelling into Supernova status in the industry.

Cassper has filled up about half a dozen stadiums in and around South Africa in his #Fillup concerts starting from The Coca-cola Dome and FNB stadium in Johannesburg to Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban and Kuisebmund Stadium in Namibia etc. Lst year Don Billiato also fillef up his hometown’s stadium, Mmabatho stadium in Mafikeng.

AKA on the other hand, before his demise had the Supa Mega concert that began in Cape Town and expanded. Ricky Rick had Cottonfest which is arguably the biggest annual music festival in Mzansi.

Even younger acts like Nasty C and A-Reece have done the Ivyson Tour and Reece Effect, respectively.

But K.O maintained that he still has a huge legacy regardless and nobody can touch his level of consistency and longevity in the game.
“Im ageing like fine wine in the music space, I’m setting a whole new tone,” he spoke about his introduction of new sounds like Skhanda and Maskandi at different times if his solo career, after beginning as one-third of the legendary Kwaito-rap group Teargas.

After ten years, the ‘Sete’ hit maker parted ways with Ma-E and Ntukza and went solo in 2014, with his classic solo debut album ‘Skhanda Republic.’

The Skhanda Republic’ franchise has spawned three different volumes in 2014, 2017 and the latest coming in 2022 and housed the international hit ‘Sete.’

“I think I’m really living the life a lot of hip-hop artists how would they like to see themselves. The longevity that I’m showcasing right now, I’m probably the first one in SA to be at it for this long and be this great for this long,” K.O said.

REVIEW: Kayode is ‘Still Figuring Life’ on New EP

After the success of his trending hit ‘Live Forever’ in 2021, Abeokuta born Nigerian singer and rapper Oluwakayode Oyetoro, popularly known as Kayode dropped a slew of singles that although successful, didn’t quite hit the level of popularity amongst Nigerian mainstream audiences. Fast forward two years after ‘Live Forever’ and Kayode and his ‘The Kay Gang’ collective shared the 24 year old’s debut mainstream project with fans on the 12th of May 2023.

The project which serves as his mainstream debut, and a follow up to 2020’s ‘Playtime is Over EP,’ consists of seven songs that Kay Kay describes as “emotional works of art that speaks to the beauty and complexities of the human condition.”

The EP features signature 808 and hi hat laced emo-drill production he has come to identify with since his 2021 breakout single ‘Live Forever.’

The EP is ushered in by the very familiar female voice tag saying an ecstatic “Kay Kayyy,” immediately the 808s drop you can tell it’s a Kayode song, he has managed to carve a niche for himself with his beat choices.

The somber ‘Fill Me Up’ serves as the intro— both a prayer and a manifesto to “level up and free my soul” by a troubled young mind trying to escape their reality.

The following track ups the tempo from a solemn reflection cut to a more Afro inclined ode to a love interest who he is telling to be patient for their time to be spoiled— titled ‘Baby Relax.”

The melodies on this track are reminiscent of another ‘Kay Kay,’ Neville record’s Khaid.

Previously released “All I Need,” is more similar to the much familiar, ‘Live Forever’ with the artist’s pitch going one octave higher

‘On My Mind,’ follows the same path, but it takes it up a notch, being less repetitive and redundant on the hook, and employs more melodies on the production and delivery.

The song speaks of responsibility, trials and tribulations while trying to navigate life in Lagos, in the underground seen of the music industry and keeping his relationship with his girl afloat.

“I had opps outside of my house on a Monday night,” Psycho YP flourishes on the melodic drill beat as Kay Kay recruits both YP and Odumodublvck to deliver two very energetic verses to spice up lead single ‘Blessings.’

“Take my belt when I am not Israel (Adesanya)?” raps Declan Rice rapper, Odumodublvck, to end his very violent, threat filled verse. Kay Kay is relegated to just the hook on this one.

‘I Don’t Want Your Love,’ is a lady’s favorite, despite it’s ironic theme of a Lagos playboy vois of emotions due to past hurt.

The album closes out with ‘Chop This Life,’ a victory lap manifesto, a somewhat more upbeat version of the intro.

The strength of this EP is Kayode’s ability to glide effortlessly on the beats without seeming to try to do too much, minimalism constitutes the beauty of Oyetoro’s music.

One downside about the EP is the almost monotonous production, excess use of 808s and a lack of sonic variety.

Highlights: Psycho YP and Odumodublvck’s verses, I don’t want your love.

Lowlights: could use better penning and more versatility in production and melodies.

Production: 7
Lyricism: 7
Cohesion: 10
Transition: 9
Features:10

TOTAL: 8.6/10

VERDICT: Shows signs of an artist who is capable of so much more, running his first lap, we are excited to see what Kay Kay will blossom into in the future. A strong introduction to the mainstream.

MCM: Kayode is “Still Figuring Life” but is Ready to “Live Forever”

While awaiting his degree from the department of Political Science from the University of Lagos, 22-year-old Oluwakayode Oyetoro, known mononymously as Kayode to his fans and other music lovers celebrated a grand entrance into the Nigerian music scene through the dance video sharing app Tik Tok, when his song ‘Live Forever’ powered by over 300 thousand usages of it’s sound—to the top of many playlists in 2021.

Like Most Gen Z creatives Kayode does not want to be boxed in to a particular genre or style. The rapper and Singer who has been making music offciallly for three years now has experimented and fused several sounds into his music since his 2019 debut, ‘Confessions.’

Even his huge 2022 hit ‘Live Forever’ is an emo-trap plus Afro and hip hop fusion. One can hear the clear Wizkid and Lil Wayne influence in his music as he has revealed in the past that those were his biggest influences growing up alongside member of the Mohits Crew.

Friendship and family are important to Oyetoro, and this is showcased in him employing his close friends, a collective known as ‘The Kay Gang’ to promote his music.

The now 24-year-old Abeokuta born entertainer recently opened his world to fans as he released his debut music project titled ‘Still Figuring Life’ in May 2023, after a strong of loose singles like ‘Superstar,’ ‘All I Need,’ ‘Blessed/Love Divine’ etc
