I first bumped into Ricky Tyler’s Music on a random 2020 afternoon’s YouTube surf session. An interview he did with Slikour was recommended and I watched it to the end, hearing him talk about his come up and his debut album enticed me to search for his music. The tube was way ahead of me and suggested a couple songs. That was how my romance with the young South African from Spruitview, Gauteng. First song I listened to was ‘Thirty K’s’ but it was the melancholic hook and the pulchritudinous rap of ‘DeJa Vu’ that proved to me that Riky was more than just a one trick pony.
After watching the videos for the above mentioned songs and ‘Everything,’ I proceeded to listen to the album and I was totally blown away.
The RnB, trap-soul and hip hop infused project gives a psychedelic cocktail of Frank Ocean-esque vocals and the pen of a rapper to serve a tall glass of classic lover-hustler-family man-old soul in a young body.
I have listened to so many classic albums in my lifetime and Ricky Tyler’s classic debut ‘Small World’ just happens to be my favorite album of all time. Since I plugged in my headphones three years ago, I’ve not taken them off.
Born in Spruitview and raised in Edenvale in the East Rand, Bokamoso Kgomotso participated in The Applause Rising Talent Showcase, at the International Arts Convention.
He was then selected to model for three designers at the Plitzs New York Fashion week, as a result.
After competing in Battle of the bands as The Ricky Tyler Show in 2016, he won a scholarship to an acting school in Orlando,Florida whee he honed his craft and ultimately discovered his strength, which set the path of his career.
He met Will McNair and that’s when his career as we know I today began. Not long after he was signed sit Playground Productions and debuted as a mainstream act.
“My music is my mirror through which I tune into who I am. Then what I feel is what lands up moving out of mouth and into the mic… slowly unraveling my soul, which will make it easier for the world to see theirs.” —Ricky Tyler.
Ricky has collaborated on songs with Tellaman, Kojo Cue, Slique, Rowlene, MI Abaga, Alpha P etc. His latest single ‘Sunday Drive’ featuring Durban’s Tellaman also dropped today.
In 2021, Tyler joined the host of African artists recruited to contribute to the ‘Coming 2 America’ Original Soundtrack, and joined the rest of the crew to perform his hit song ‘Everything’ on the NPR Tiny Desk Concert.
Announced over a month ago, Dee Koala officially releases Anazinto which has already accumulated thousands of streams just days post-release.
Rapping over a slow tempo, drum-laced instrumental, Dee tackles various parts of her being, from betrayal to grief, all while keeping her head up, working hard, and looking forward to a brighter future.
LeoPr3ttyAugust follows through with carrying her message as he closes off the song.
O-Block, Chicago rapper, Lil Durk and Veteran North Carolina rapper J.Cole debuted their highly anticipated single ‘All My Life’ on Friday, May 13th, 2023. The song has garnered rave review from fans and and critics alike since its release. Nigerian rapper and Singer Swayvee has come out to state how very similar the song sounds to his 2021 hit of the same title.
Apart from both songs sharing a title ‘All My Life,’ both songs also gave the same drum pattern and the same hook pattern.
Also Swayvee is also known as The Bandage Bandit, he is often seen covered in bandages in his videos and photos, the cover art of his ‘All My Life’ single has an animation of himself covered in bandages and Durk’s song cover also sees the OTF rapper covered in bandages.

Veteran South African rapper Ntokozo Mdluli, popularly known as K.O, did a pit stop at the UK Podcast Drinks with Noms in London, for an interview, in the midst of his UK Tour. Amongst other things discussed was Mr. Cash time’s legacy, which the host pointed out that a lot of people so not give K.O his due recognition for his contributions to the SA rap culture and music industry as a whole, as opposed to some other of his colleagues.
The Polokwane-born rapper stated that although his fans have love for him and he is not complaining about the reception, it is still true a lot of people always take him to the back seat when discussing SA hip hop hierarchies, and he believes he partly to blame for it.
“I’ve never done just the K.O concert back home like where it’s like okay, this is specifically if you walk through those doors you are solely going in there to see this man,” he stated. “My peers have done that, you’re talking about Cassper Nyovest, even AKA and all those kinds of people. I’ve never done that.”
He is referring to Cassper and Kiernan being the two biggest and most influential South African rappers of the last decade, due to their musical releases, collaborations, beef and concerts— the latter especially propelling into Supernova status in the industry.
Cassper has filled up about half a dozen stadiums in and around South Africa in his #Fillup concerts starting from The Coca-cola Dome and FNB stadium in Johannesburg to Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban and Kuisebmund Stadium in Namibia etc. Lst year Don Billiato also fillef up his hometown’s stadium, Mmabatho stadium in Mafikeng.
AKA on the other hand, before his demise had the Supa Mega concert that began in Cape Town and expanded. Ricky Rick had Cottonfest which is arguably the biggest annual music festival in Mzansi.
Even younger acts like Nasty C and A-Reece have done the Ivyson Tour and Reece Effect, respectively.
But K.O maintained that he still has a huge legacy regardless and nobody can touch his level of consistency and longevity in the game. “Im ageing like fine wine in the music space, I’m setting a whole new tone,” he spoke about his introduction of new sounds like Skhanda and Maskandi at different times if his solo career, after beginning as one-third of the legendary Kwaito-rap group Teargas.
After ten years, the ‘Sete’ hit maker parted ways with Ma-E and Ntukza and went solo in 2014, with his classic solo debut album ‘Skhanda Republic.’
The Skhanda Republic’ franchise has spawned three different volumes in 2014, 2017 and the latest coming in 2022 and housed the international hit ‘Sete.’
“I think I’m really living the life a lot of hip-hop artists how would they like to see themselves. The longevity that I’m showcasing right now, I’m probably the first one in SA to be at it for this long and be this great for this long,” K.O said.

For some time now, SA Hip Hop fans have been requesting a collaboration between Nasty C and MagleraDoeBoy, though it never materialized until recently when a photo of the two in a makeshift hotel studio surfaced on the internet.
Posted by Nani Chehore, who was behind the production of Nasty C’s Strings & Bling as well as Zulu Man With Some Power, he tagged Mashbeatz, MDB, Nasty C, Tellaman, and guitarist, Dylan Fine.
In the photo, we see Mashbeatz seated in front of a laptop while MDB stands beside him facing a mic. In the back are the rest of the crew including Tellaman who fans are elated to hear from since his last release in late 2022.
