Cameroon’s most prolific Female Rapper/Song Writer, Askia (Mami Bakala) has taken to her official Facebook page to address the issue of being a citizen of her country and living within its borders. The “Get The Bag” Series Queen wrote:
“Have you ever thought like the number 1 problem you are facing is being a Cameroonian living in Cameroon? Scary feeling. Wakes me up from sleep in the middle of the night a lot these days only to wake up and see it’s reality and not just a nightmare. How do I tell these kids that being a female rapper in Cameroon is a good idea? And how do I make it better for them all by myself? So much talent that is struggling to breathe in my hands while I am also struggling to breathe and support them at the same time ALL BY MYSELF.”

South African-Zimbabwean Big Zulu rapper has finally put the rumours to rest as he has confirmed his collaboration with ‘Zulu man with some power’ himself and Nigerian ragga artist Patoranking.
The indigenous rapper shared a snippet of the song during his interview on Everything SA Music Podcast.
This will not be first time Patoranking is working with SA musicians as the ‘Abule‘ singer has previously worked with Nasty C on Major Lazer‘s 2017 global hit ‘Particula.’

Nsikayesizwe Ncgobo and Ronald Mataboge popularly known as A-Reece and Nasty C respectively, have been pitted and paralleled since they shot into limelight in 2016. Both are rappers and were the same age at the time, as they led the revolution of the young rappers influx into the SA rap game. Six years later both rappers are still very relevant, bagging nominations for artist of the decade at the 2022 SAHHA’s and are celebrating individual milestones.
A-Reece has been announced the most streamed Indie artist in SA for the second year in a row, in 2021 Baby boy had the most streamed project from any hip hop artist in the country racking up more than 3 million streams for his ‘Today’s Tragedy Tomorrow’s Memory‘ mixtape.
Reece’s streaming numbers this year come from the mixtape and the joint album with his elder brother Jay Jody.
On the other hand, Nasty C’s 2021 single ‘Jack’ has been certified platinum in the country and also hit another milestone as the most streamed solo hip hop song from South Africa ever on Spotify, with over 4 million streams on the platform.
Apparently, Boxing bouts between SA’s biggest stars have come to stay, Cassper and AKA were the first celebrities to suggest substituting the microphone and booth for gloves and a ring respectively. Albeit their match never followed through due to AKA losing his fiance last year, Cassper went ahead to find another contender and found himself in the bout with Slik Talk and subsequently Naakmusiq.
Boxing being a sport big on trash-talking and rattling one’s opponents Cassper Nyovest has sent a warning message to his next challenger, South African rapper Ricardo Moloi, most commonly known as Priddy Ugly.
The preparation for the boxing match is constantly heating up since Priddy called Tsibip out on Twitter in July, as Cassper announced that facing SlikTalK for a rematch was not worth it.
Recently both rappers have been spending most of their time in the gym.
Don Billiato shared a video clip of him working out in the gym on Twitter. The ‘Tito Mboweni‘ rapper warned Priddy Ugly stating that his fellow rapper must work hard as he is coming for a knockout when the two faces off.
In the same tweet, Mufasa also urged Priddy to sign the contract so that they can go ahead with the fight.
I heard you’ve started training for me. Make sure you train hard cause I’m coming for a knockout .@ItsPriddyUgly Sign the contract!!!! Let’s go!!! pic.twitter.com/tkJ2iVu4al
Cassper’s boxing record is one win against Slik Talk and one defeat to Naakmusiq, fans are eager to see how Priddy will do against Mufasa and still agitating for AKA to hit the ring but that seems unlikely as Cassper and Kiernan shared a bromance moment in the Riky Rick celebrity football match organized by Big Zulu.

There’s a lot of new music for Nigerian hip-hop fans to be excited about in the remaining months of the year 2022. After Hip-Hop lovers in the ‘Green-White-Green’ territory have been forced into listening to more of the Afrobeats genre, it looks like we’ll finally get some of the music from our preferred genre again before the year runs out. And if the usual build-up events after the announcements and release are any indication, things are sure to get interesting. From the underground to the A-list rap heads, the rest of 2022 is shaping up to be a year full of surprises from some of rap’s biggest names in Nigeria.
Of course, the world is a bizarre place these days, and anything could happen. But for the sake of optimism, here are 3 of our most anticipated rap albums for the last few months left in 2022.
Interestingly, the trio listed in this article are all proteges of Chocolate City. Without much ado; I present to you —
Blaqbonez – Young Preacher
Blaqbonez previously announced that he is been working on a new album on his Twitter page. In a tweet, he wrote, “my next album is called ‘Young Preacher,’ been working on it since the day dropped Sex over love.” Since the release of his 2021 Sex Over Love, Blaqbonez has been the opposite of a preacher of love. He held a whole concert dubbed “Breaking the Yoke of Love Crusade” where he gave other performing artists names like evangelists, ministers, and elders. He also went ahead to release Go Home earlier this year and it strategically keyed into the ‘no-love’ message.
Seeing that Blaqbonez has an album in the making called “Young Preacher”, we are wondering what kind of funny tactics the rapper wants to pull on us this time and this keeps us excited and anticipating the release of the new album.
M.I Abaga – The Guy
When M.I Abaga drops an album expect bars, punchlines and the best lyrical delivery. Having won the Headies Award for the Best Rap Album and Lyricist on the Roll in 2016 and 2018 respectively, the revered rapper is not the one to joke with when it comes to hip-hop.
After continually teasing the album on his social media pages, M.I recently revealed via a tweet that his new album, The Guy would be released on August 19th. The album consists of 12 tracks with features from Nas, Olamide, Jesse Jagz, Wande Coal, Ice Prince, Duncan Mighty, and BNXN. He’s also asked his fans to address him with the new moniker, ‘The Guy’ as a build-up to the new album as well as released a single titled, The Guy. With five more days to go, we can wait for the release of this new album.
Jesse Jagz – Family Tree
M.I Abaga did say Jesse Jagz is the greatest in lyrics of ‘I’m Hot.’ “See even Jagz don’t mess with me and Jagz is the greatest.” No doubt, Jesse Jags is one of the best rappers to come out of Nigeria. The ace lyricist has proved his career worth with albums like Jagz of all Trade and Jagz Nation Vol 1: Thy Nation Come.
The announcement of Jagz’s new album, Family Tree came with a twist, “my forthcoming album is going to feature a lot of music genres. Hip hop, Jazz, Reggae, Afrobeats, R&B, Pop and so much more. The waiting hasn’t been in vain! You’ll understand why Leo had to isolate,” he tweeted. Normally, Jagz is the type to do full hip-hop but with this tweet, it’s obvious that we should expect different genres which even makes us more delighted about the release of the new album.

Tell us about yourself.
There’s not much to say about myself than to say I am a product of West Africa, born in Lagos Nigeria to Ghanaian parents with so many experiences shaping my life in both countries. I am just an ambitious young man.
What were your growing-up days like?
It was challenging and an experience I would not change. Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria was the best thing to ever happen to me. I couldn’t be imagined being born anywhere else because it shaped my passion for art and entertainment and my drive to achieve the impossible. After all, if you grow up in Lagos you would know it’s a fast city.
How did you come across the Hip-Hop Genre/ Why Hip-Hop?
Hip-hop drives culture and that’s it. From music to style and fashion. Hip-hop music and Hip-hop Artists are at the forefront of what we get from the entertainment industry and I have always wanted to be a part of that. I came across the genre naturally. It found me because growing up in Nigeria at the
time, we had Afrobeat popping in my younger days. You never hear our parents play hip-hop music, it’s either old school or afrobeat.
What major impact has Hip-Hop had/have in your life?
It inspires the way I plan to navigate the entertainment industry. I listen to hip-hop music every day. I listen to a whole lot of genres of music but Hip-hop affects my life more as I am inspired by a few rappers like Jay Z, Ye, Drake, and A-Q, to mention a few.
How did you discover blogging?
I am not a blogger.
What’s the idea behind HipHopAfrica.Net?
The Idea behind Hip-hop Africa is to be the number one hub for African Hip-hop. The goal is to promote African hip-hop culture to the world. We have a land mine filled with talents and creatives and it’s our time to shine. Hip-hop Africa will play its role in making sure that reality comes alive.
What has been your most successful post? Why do you think it was appealing?
I haven’t taken note of that because we haven’t started working yet. We have been playing and it’s time to get to work.
How do you attract new readers? Describe the methods you’ve used and their impact on site traffic.
Social media, events, merch and more I will disclose overtime
Do you think Hip-Hop in Africa still enjoys massive popularity or hype in the media?
No, we have had a slow growth due to inconsistency with the team and now we are building a solid team. We would be good to go.
How can the media help put Hip-Hop back in the spotlight? Especially in Africa
The media can help by accepting our content and ideas. I won’t want to say much on this and let the content and projects speak for themselves.

Lehlohonolo Ronald Mataboge of Danville Extension 3, Atteridgeville, West Pretoria, is set to launch his new label and drop new music on a traditional date. A-Reece has had several label/crew disputes in the past, from Ambitiouz Entertainment to The Wrecking Crew and Rubberband Gang, now Reece is ready to keep all the money in the family as he readies his independent label co-founded with his elder brother, rapper Jay Jody.
The last two A-Reece projects dropped in 2021; ‘heaveN CaN waiT: volumE 1’ and ‘Today’s Tragedy Tomrrow’s Memory’ both bore the crest of a label called ‘Revenge Club Records.’
In early 2022 it was reported that the name ‘Revenge Club Records’ was publicly registered and copyrighted.
On the red carpet in this year’s SAMAs A-Reece told reporters that he is about to launch the new label and our guesses are that the label will not only Reece and Jody but also Wordz who has always been with Reece on whichever stable he is under, and maybe 25k who is from Pretoria and is heavily affiliated with Reece and Jody.
Fans have also called for A-Reece to sign Pretoria new kid Tyson Sybatelli and bring back producer Mashbeatz
Moving on to new music, Baby Boy announced on the third installment of his ‘Couldn’t Have Said It Better‘ series that he will be dropping new music in Libra season with the lyrics ”They want me to prove what I’m worth I tell ’em, I’ll see you niggas on October 21st, yeah.”
October 21 has in the past been a traditional date for A-Reece, his debut and sophomore albums ‘Paradise’ and ‘From Me To You & Only You‘ were released on the same date in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
The next project ‘And I’m Only 21’ was also released on the same date in 2018. Since then Reece has not been consistent with the date.
The 25-year-old rapper recently tweeted ”10 WEEKS” and the fans have been speculating what project will be dropping on the announced date, between’ Paradise 2,’The Burning Tree Deluxe’ and ‘heaveN caN waiT vol 2.’
