It has been 2 years since Blxckie released B4NOW, his debut album that featured some of our favorite songs including Sika and Ye x4, ultimately becoming a chart-topping, gold-certified project.
For Blxckie, the success of his project and the support he received was an opportunity to break ground and do something he’s passionate about – and it was this passion that inevitably opened countless doors for him.
Within the two years of the album release, Blxckie embarked on the B4NOW tour, headlined multiple shows, expanded his catalog with numerous collaborations including his appearance in AKA’s posthumous album, Mass Country, and was recently listed to perform at the SXSW festival in Texas.
In celebration of B4NOW‘s second anniversary, Somnyama shares a 2-pack on his SoundCloud page titled “The2yr Anniversary Pack.” The project consists of songs Blessed + Tired (originally two individual songs [Blessed and Tired] both taken from B4NOW), as well as 2057.

Cassper Nyovest began the trend of celebrity boxing among artists in South Africa, as a first a means to soar against and settle the beef with his late arch-rival AKA, (RIP SUPA MEGA). AKA backed out of the fight at the last minute and Cassper had to settle for a bout in the ring against YouTuber Slik Talk, and subsequently a loss to NaakMusiq and a Knockout victory against East Rand rapper Priddy Ugly.
Today, more and more SA artists and celebrities are engaging in celebrity charity boxing matches. Inkabi boss Big Zulu has been asking for a bout versus Nyovest since the latter’s bout against Priddy Ugly and plans have been made but nothing concrete has been announced yet.
Big Zulu had to settle for another challenger in the person of Brian Dings, and Nyovest was in the crowd to watch the fight.
After the fight Cassper was sure about his victory against the ‘Imali Eningi’ rapper. stating that he is not bothered about the size and weight advantage on Big Zulu’s side.
“Of course, I came here to watch him fight and I wanted to see what he got, I’m actually more confident now to fight him even after the knockout,” Cassper said.
“I think he’s exactly what I thought he would be, a big puncher, always relying on his right. The fight was short but I think it’s exactly what I thought he would be.”
“Im not too considerate about the weight, I think I trust my skills and he could be as heavy as he wants to be. In fact, I think that would actually work to my advantage if he is heavier.” Cassper added.
“It’s official on the 23rd of May the fight is on myself and @bigzulu_sa go at it in a surprise boxing match details coming soon ✊🏿✊🏿 Who is your money on?” Wrote Stilo Magolide.
South African fashion entrepreneur turned rapper Michael Chirwa, popularly known as Stilo Magolide has come out to announce that the next celebrity match up will be between him and the Inkabi boss.
The fight will take place on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2023 at, as announced on Instagram.
Several celebrities reacted in surprise under the post including You g Stunna’, Okmalumkoolkat, Mashbeatz, Sol Phenduka etc. One comment read, “when did you train man?” Referring to Stilo Magolide.
In 2015, Ambitiouz Entertainment launched with Soweto raised trap superstar Emtee as their frontman. Fast forward almost a decade later, Pretoria has become one of the bubbling centers of South African Hip Hop with Mashbeatz providing the background sound for a group of young rappers who are taking the industry by storm, from Cap City.
Today there is way more than Khuli Chana and Blaklez hoisting the Capital’s flag, the game is now replete with rappers from Atteridgeville to Mamelodi, rappers like Tyson Sybatelli, Thato Saul, The Big Hash, just to list a few.
The question now begs, what does all these have to do with A-Reece?
Lehlohonolo Ronald Mataboge, most commonly called A-Reece by fans is a South African rapper from Danville Extension 3, Pretoria. The rapper was one of those signed as the first batch of artistes on Ambitiouz Entertainment, alongside his big brother Jay Jody of B3nchmarq at the time, Fifi Cooper, Emtee, Saudi, Miss Pru and Sjava, in 2016.
The same year his debut single ‘Couldn’t’ featuring Emtee went viral and it was followed by other smash hits ‘Mgani,’ ‘Paradise,’ and ‘Zimbali.’
Reece was never one to be shy about where he’s from even before he was signed, always taking every opportunity to let you know he hails from Pretoria— the most not so subtle of these references being titling a song ‘Meanwhile in Pitori.’
A-Reece did not however come into the game alone, apart from his brother, his group of childhood friends, in the form of the group One Thousand Degreez usually accompanied Reece in his freestyle videos and shows, playing opening act for The boy doing things.
“Cap City, rap city, hip hop is in the building.”
Reece was even more vocal about his roots after leaving Ambitiouz in 2017. Even more active in putting his homies on, One Thousand Degreez joined Mellow, Ecco, Ex-Global in The Wrecking Crew, alongside Katlehong-born Flvme and Limpopo born Mashbeatz, who all operated from Pitori save for the brief moment they lived in Honeydew in the North Rand.
Reece is so grounded to his roots that after the group disbanded he moved permanently back home—but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.
With Mashbeatz providing the Soundscape, Reece and his cohorts stuck to a signature sound— fusing Drake-esque melodic raps with heart on the sleeves lyricism, and a militant, in your face delivery…over Mash’s chopped old school movie soundtrack and 70s soul samples, daunting dark synths and 808 hi hats.
Reece had rapped on ‘You Welcome’ on his debut album. The Wrecking Crew boys were a part of the first group of South African acts to douse their music in the American new wave of trap and emo music alongside Durban’s Nasty C, and Matatiele/Soweto’s Emtee.
They debunked the myth that all the good hip hop in the country came from Jozi or Cape Town.
In 2017, not long after his first hit single with Stogie T, Pretoria born trapper and producer Zoocci Coke Dope collaborated with on his biggest song up till that time ‘All Night Long,’ the country was also put on to The Big Hash on his Reece-assisted single ‘Outcast.’
One could sight both Zoocci and Hash on stage with TWC on stage from Pretoria to The North, from Free State to Eastern Cape, like Reece famously rapped “every show we go at large, I’m my own boss,” “we move as a unit, come show us you G.”
Then TWC broke up into two seperate entities;
Rubber Band Gang and Lean Team, and then Mashbeatz and Flvme left the team in 2021, the revolution did not stop.
Despite not being from the city, Mash and Fuego continued to shape the sound of Pretoria even after no longer being affiliated with Reece. Flvme through his numerous collaborations with The Big Hash, Ecco the Beast and other new wave Pitori trap acts.
Mashbeatz floated his ‘Outta This World’ stable in Summer 21 and produced an album for Thato Saul and Tyson Sybatelli and then for himself.
In the same year A-Reece partnered with his brother to form the group bluE TapE and through their album and Reece’s mixtape introduced audiences to such underground acts as Belo Salo, Marcus Harvey and Ayanda Jiya, despite these acts not hailing from the capital.
On 25K’s debut album ‘Pheli Makaveli’ Reece and his brother Jay Jody appeared on the lead single ‘Hustlers Prayer’ and delivered arguably the frtaure verse of the year, putting mainstream audiences on to yet another budding Pretoria talent.
Wordz The Prince who has been Reece’s right hand man since the TWC days, since making his debut on 2017’s ‘Long Lost Letters’ also dropped his debut solo album ‘Product of a Praying Mother‘ in 2021 with a Reece Collab and an appearance on Reece’s mixtape dropped the same year.
The next generation of Pretoria hip hop spearheaded by Tyson Sybatelli and Marcus Harvey amongst others are reaping off the groundwork doje by the Mataboge brothers and Mashbeatz.
The soundscape of the city has greatly influenced by Mashbeatz’ sould samples, IMP Tha Don and Iceman Beatz’ daunting horns and bells, and Zoocci Coke Dope’s hi-hats and 808s.
All these artists and producers have one thing in common, A-Reece affiliations and co-signs.
Now the whole country wants a taste of the sound from Pitori, as Mash is working with more artists all over Mzansi, last year’s ‘Never Ride’ and its multiple remixes proved that and now even Durban’s finest, Nasty C and Tellaman were seen in studio with Mash the President.

A week ago Emeka teamed up with veteran American rapper Ludacris to serve a clever flip of Bill Withers’ 1977 hit ‘Lovely Day,’ into a modern take of a love interest who no longer takes care of the artist’s emotional and sexual needs, a searching Prince Charming of some sort as Blaq sings “where you dey, where you dey…” on the hook.
In thematic synergy with the song, Director Blaqbonez makes yet another outing behind the lenses to deliver a modern day rendiri of the Disney tale, with Miami as the backdrop, playing his enchanted forest.
The video shows Blaq driving around the picturesque city looking for his lost love who he met at a ball, I mean club— Blaq has half a pair of her earrings and it serves as the glass slippers for this fairytale.
The video was announced by Abuchi Peter, the CEO of Chocolate City on Twitter and released barely over three hours ago, it already boasts of 5.6k views on YouTube.

Joeboy who recently released his sophomore album recruited American legendary rapper Ludacris on one of the records on the album.
Luda who was recently featured by Nigeria’s very own rapper Blaqbonez has now gone ahead to bag his second Nigerian feature with this record titled “Chicken, Spice & Curry” off Joeboy’s “Body & Soul” album.
The song although very short sees Ludacris deliver his signature rap style on the very Afro-centric instrumental. His delivery on the record makes me wonder if we should ask for a Ludacris Afrobeat project.
Ludacris is however not the only rapper featured on the project. The hottest Nigerian rapper on the block, OdumoduBlvck was featured on the Number 1 track on the album.
Odumodu who was featured on the record “Normally” alongside BNXNfkaBuju. As usual, the rapper who always eats with no crumbs left, delivered a heavy verse on the record.
The project features a whole lot of amazing music, although only Ludacris and OdumoduBlvck made it in as rappers, the other features are CKay, Tempoe, Kemena and Oli Ekun.
Enjoy the project with the link above and leave a review in the comment session.
Wande Coal who recently dropped his third studio album “Legend or No Legend” has displayed his tendencies to flow appropriately on a trap beat with his delivery on the 3rd track of the project.
The “3 Square Meal” record sees Wande Coal flow seamlessly on the trap-infused beat as he delivers his vocals with his ever-sonorous voice. While, it is okay to argue that Wande Coal is not a Hip-hop act, his delivery on this record will make him body any trap-infused instrumental.
The album which has now unseated Davido’s “Timeless Album” from the number one position on the Nigerian Apple music album chart has continued to enjoy good reviews from industry watchers and fans alike.

Two weeks ago Katlehong-born rapper Flvme shared heartbreaking news with his fans, the trap and melodic rap artist was robbed of his studio equipments and also lost a lot of unreleased music in the process. The rapper had decided to waste no time in dropping music for his fans as he announces ‘Lost Files Pack Series,’ an 8-track project that will feature the likes of Guapdad 4000, Ben September and Davionne.
Ben September and Davionne both previously appeared on FLVME’s last full-length project, ‘Germander II’ released in 2022.
The rapper took to his IG to announce the album release for May 26th and previewed a song that will come with it titled ‘Only one (Interlude).’
