Kay Faith Encompasses More Elements Of HipHop As An African Woman

0

Your favorite rapper’s favorite producer, Kay Faith, is an award-winning engineer turned record producer. Having worked with some of the biggest HipHop artists in the country, she has proven herself not only as Kaapstad’s taste maker but as an important part of South Africa’s music scene. With each set she DJs, each classic she samples and each hit she creates, she shows us that we can draw inspiration from all corners of SA and reminds us just how talented and unique our style is locally.

Apple Music’s New Artist Spotlight for the year January 2018 was none other than Cape Town-based hip-hop producer, sound engineer and songwriter Kay Faith, real name Karien Barnard. She was the first woman producer to achieve the feat.

She released her impressive debut EP “In Good Faith” in September 2017. The project features rappers such as Ginger Trill, Uno July, Big Star and many more. She produced most of the EP with fellow producers Buli and AirDee, co-producing the songs “Feelings and Stuff” and “High Note.”

Over the past few years, Faith has been working with your favourite South African rappers. Songs such as YoungstaCPT’s “Own 2016,” and the hook to Kwesta’s “Day Ones,” among others have all gone under her hand. She recorded, mixed and mastered Uno July’s Uno ‘n Only and Zero Hour Zonealbums.

Faith and her team have engineered shows for rappers Nasty C, Spoek Mathambo and Reason. They also designed the stage visuals for Mick Jenkins’ Cape Town shows in 2017, working with Soulection.

In 2014, Faith found herself in a session with Yasiin Bey. Through working with Whosane’s Brooklyn-born rapper ally, she met Ill Skillz and brought him to the studio. She also engineered for Mos Def through this connection.

It was through Whosane that she found herself in the studio with Da L.E.S in 2015, recording songs for his album. “It was supposed to be Da L.E.S and AKA actually,” she says, “but there were issues with AKA’s bags, so he had to stay at the airport.” Da LES came through and recorded some demos for his album and we had an excellent connection.”

In September 2022, It’s was undoubtedly Antithesis season and Kay Faith is nowhere near stopping.

Top Ten brought out Cape Town’s new wave and we saw KashCPT, Hanna and Holy Alpha bringing nothing but bars and energy to the Kay Faith produced beat.

Top Ten is the lead single from Kay’s debut album Antithesis, released July 22nd of last year, and has seen the Cape Town producer featured on Ebro’s renowned Apple Music Radio show, with Kay Faith covering the coveted Apple Music Rap Life playlist, a star appearance on Dotty’s Apple Music Radio hip hop special, with singles from the album play listed across national radio stations, some even topping charts.

Fans Shocked at the Reveal of Sim Dope’s Identity at AKA’s Memorial

Longtime members of the Megacy will remember the following lines ”If I die I pray to God he bring me back as Sim Dope.” The year is 2014 and ‘Kontrol’ and ‘Congratulate’ are on heavy radio rotation. AKA’s sophomore album ‘Levels’ just dropped and the second track is titled Sim Dope and is an ode to somebody who sounds so great they seem like a made up character like Tony Montana or Don Vito Corleone of Hollywood flicks fame.

Imagine a person so cool that the coolest superstar South African rapper ever wants to be you so bad.

No wonder fans were a bit shocked to find out that Sim Dope was actually an existing, living and breathing person.

Simphiwe Gumede, son of Billionaire Robert Gumede was a childhood friend of Kiernan Forbes, from St. John’s high school and they remained friends until Supa Mega’s tragic passing in Durban on the 10th of February, 2023.

AKA has spoken about him on interviews before but Sim Dope’s full identity was revealed and a face was put on the name for the first time at the rapper’s memorial service where he gave a touching tribute to his late friend.

Fans were shocked and went on twitter to show their surprise at the revelation.

#MassCountry Tracklist Revealed Ahead of Friday Release

0

With just over a week since his passing, Kiernan “AKA” Forbes’ family and team, in their grief and mourning, have stayed professional and united through preparations for the rapper’s memorial, funeral, and overall album rollout.

As fans eagerly wait for Mass Country to arrive, AKA’s team shares the album’s tracklist and back cover ahead of its release this Friday.

Mass Country tracklist

The star-studded tracklist features some of our favorite artists including Thato Saul on Mbuzi Freestyle, Nasty C in the previously released Lemons (Lemonade), as well as Kiddominant on the newly dropped single, Company.

The art cover is rich with a plethora of symbols that represent South Africa and the continent at large. From the 10 cent coin, maize, and broken infrastructure, to the African map, the diamond, and the Gusheshe. The cover epitomizes the characteristics of our beloved land.

The production of the project is credited to the likes of Zädok, Tshepo “Teddy” Moloi, and AKA himself.

At the beginning of February, the rapper boasted in a series of tweets about how he just may be the greatest South African Hip Hop producer of all time considering that he’s produced 90% of his songs.

Fans of the late rapper will finally get to hear the new music he’s been working on for over 2 years. Be sure to set your reminders and check back on Friday when Mass Country officially drops.

Pre-save the album here.

The Narrator CPT: Taking over Kaapstad

0

Alex Damons better known as The Narrator CPT is taking over “Kaapstad”.

If you’re from Cape Town then you would have heard of songs like ‘Be Mine’ or his very latest freestyle ‘The Kings Speech’. Although ‘Be Mine’ was only released on all streaming platforms in July 2020 he has been making a name for himself since 2017 with numerous freestyles on Instagram which gained him 82 661 total views at the time. Since 2017 things have most certainly changed.

I remember speaking to Alex in 2020 and he expressed “I am a voice for those who can’t speak or don’t know how to speak for themselves. I was put on this earth to inspire those around me and build a better community for others to thrive. The only way we can better ourselves is by uplifting others”.

Two years had passed, and I wondered if after having so much personal growth and being more involved in the music industry if he would feel the same way.

In his latest interview with Hiphop Africa, he expresses himself in a more thoughtful way coming across as someone who has matured in a physical aspect but also grown in his way of thinking. He is now well informed and knows that the music industry is not all “buddy, buddy” as it way appears from the outside.

I asked Alex how he would describe the music industry and he said war. Even this doesn’t phase him. He has embraced the challenge of going to war with other artists and wanting to be the best. There is no settling for second place, and he is determined to be the best no matter what it takes.

Alex Damons calls himself the storyteller of the Cape. In our very interview, I remember him sharing: “ I was put on this earth to inspire those around me and build a better community for others to thrive. The only way we can better ourselves is by uplifting others.”

Just about three years later The Narrator is praised by those in his community for being a positive role model for the younger generation. Role models are hard to come by in a community that is afflicted with crime and gangsterism. Fully embracing this next step in his career, he now wants to do more collaborations with other artists and expand outside of his usual fanbase.

“As I grow and I experienced more of life my music will change, I always want it to remain that impactful to people, hearing little children scream my name when I walk in the street keeps me going. “

The Narrator CPT

This interview has been lightly edited for the purpose of clarity and context. The interview consists of two parts this being part 1.

Daniel Young: How does it feel to have come so far in your music career?

The Narrator CPT: Having come so far has been fulfilling for one. I say fulfilling because I can do anything that I want. I have reached a point in my career where whatever I put my mind to, I feel that I can achieve.

Daniel Young: I know that working towards a certain objective, can cause you not to be fully present in the moment. How do you manage to stay present in times like this?

The Narrator CPT:  It’s good that you ask that question. I always feel that I can do more. I think that being satisfied leads to laziness. When you become satisfied then you don’t want to be ambitious anymore and you lose that hunger to want to win all the time. I think that not being satisfied will take me than I am already. Looking back, I am proud that I overcame certain moments in my life.

Daniel Young: What advice would you give your younger self?

The Narrator CPT:  You get exactly what you desire. We can all say that we want certain things but it’s our actions that will show if we really want those things. At the end of the day, we are only going to reap the fruits of our labour. Another thing that I would tell my younger self is that I shouldn’t give up either rather put it the hard work now so that I won’t have to regret anything later.

Daniel Young: When you are going through difficult times, what is your mindset like?

The Narrator CPT: Honestly speaking I feel that I don’t dwell on things too much. I can make all the plans and write things down on a whiteboard but ultimately its God’s plan over mine. I really trust God to make my plans prosper.

Daniel Young: In terms  of making music has there been any difficulty?

The Narrator CPT: Yes, I would say that it is the pressure that I put on myself. Nobody can really influence what I do on the outside but I think that its more of an internal factor. I am my own biggest critic if I am honest. I always tell myself that I can do things better whether that is writing music or even the recording process. Even with my writing I would need to write things in a certain way for people to understand it.  So even with that I am thinking of ways that I can make the listening experience for the listener better. That is a lot of pressure that I carry but its all personal of course.

Daniel Young: Pressure? How do you manage to keep that balance of it being a positive thing and not a negative one…

The Narrator CPT: I don’t think that I have the balance yet if I am being completely honest. Most people that win is motived by pressure. I personally don’t ever want to be content where I am. I think that the pressure that I put on myself will help me to grow where I want to be. I think that 70% pressure is better than 30% pressure. I always want to keep my foot on the pedal.

Daniel Young: I would you describe the current landscape of South African music?

Alex Damons: That’s a good question. I don’t even know if I have the proper answer to that question. Now it feels all over the show. I feel that in you ask this question to 5 different rappers in the music industry then you would get 5 different answers. I personally feel that the market is oversaturated. I feel that there is so many rappers and so many people that doesn’t want to even make music, but they call themselves artist. I feel that in Cape Town we don’t have enough unity, we are always stressing the importance of unity and being together as a community but at the moment that is happening. The sad part is that if we stay in Cape Town there is a glass ceiling. There is always that movement where artists from Cape Town move to Johannesburg to grow their brand. We all know that Johannesburg is on fire right now as always, but Cape Town can also get there if we increase our unity.

Daniel Young: Where do you see yourself in the current landscape?

The Narrator CPT: I feel that I am that person who has a gap in the market. I will tell you why. I don’t swear in any of my music, I don’t think that it is necessary to even do so. I feel that people swear if they don’t have any more lyrics to say. I speak about things that I experience, and I feel that other people just speak about cars and jewelry. That type of content can only last for so long before people get  tired and bored of it.

In our next interview The Narrator CPT will be discussing more about his music releases for the year.

Lifestyle: Jovi’s “Mboko Gang” Fan Base And Giving Back To The Society

The Mboko Gang are a prime example of what a committed and fruitful fan base looks like. For over 10 years, they have stood solid for Cameroonian rapper Jovi, and have made a significant mark in the hearts of Cameroonians.

Recently, they have gone above and beyond in their dedication to their star, visiting a prison in the eastern region of the country and donating goods to prisoners in celebration of Jovi. This is a testament to the power of their fan base, and to support has had.

Moreover, Mboko Gang have declared February 16th as Jovi day. This day serves as an opportunity for the fan base to come together and celebrate their star, while also carrying out humanitarian works that benefit their local community.

Late AKA’s Family Receives Cassper Nyovest into their Home Despite Beef.

South African hip hop lost one of it’s most foremost pioneers on legend Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA on the 10th of February 2023, funeral and memorial processions followed amidst fans and celebrities mourning the legend all over the African continent. A Tweep asked AKA’s archrival Cassper Nyovest if he would be attending the funeral and memorial events, under a tribute tweet the latter made in honour of Forbes.

Nyovest however relied that no matter how people want to look at it, he respected AKA as an artist and a colleague even though they never got along as friends and collaborators, and that his death is a huge loss to the SA music industry and he would have attended the memorial and funeral events if he was in the country.

At the time Tsibip was away on business, once he landed in South Africa he made his way to the Forbes’ family home in Bryanston, Johannesburg, to pay his tributes to the slain Supa Mega.

According to Sunday World Newspaper, ”Cassper Nyovest arrived there and told AKA’S family that the much-publicised beef between him and AKA was over-exaggerated and that they were getting along very well and shared the same vision,” said the source.

Cassper and AKA were at the highest echelon of SA hip hop for a decade and shared a Messi-Ronaldo type rivalry which wasn’t as friendly a the footballers’ at times.

It got abusive and physical at the height of the beef around 2014-17, almost resulting in the two settling it inside a boxing ring until AKA pulled out due ot the death of his then fiance, Nellie Tembe.

ManCrushMonday: The President, Mashbeatz

Mashbeatz has had one of the most successful runs in SA Hip Hop as of late and it can’t be left unsaid.

Kicking off what would soon become an amazing 2022, the producer/Dj had the streets chanting the lyrics to Never Ride with MagleraDoeBoy (MDB) and Thato Saul whom Mash collaborated with the previous year in If You Know, You Know.

Mashbeatz – Never Ride

Mash followed up a few months later, bringing together some popular names in SA Hip Hop including Sjava, 25K, and YoungstaCpt for the Never Ride Remix that won him a “Best Remix” award at the SA Hip Hop Awards.

Never Ride Remix video shoot

Not only that, both versions of the song were streamed over a million times on YouTube with over 1.8million views (Never Ride) and 1million views (Never Ride remix) respectively.

Toward the end of 2022, Mash had worked on Dj Sliqe, 25K, and MDB’s Champion Music 2 EP, and dropped apparel for Never Ride and his record label, Outta This World. He closed the year off with the release of This Is Religion, later teasing a studio session with Elaine, and finally receiving his gold plaque for Never Ride.

The popular producer also found himself on billboards across the USA, including Miami, Atlanta, and Nashville – a phenomenal feat for SA Hip Hop and African Hip Hop as a whole.

The hustle flow deep in my vein, my nigga.

-Thato Saul, Never Ride

With such an eventful year, there seems to be no stopping him. Together with Saudi, who also made an appearance in the Never Ride Remix, Mashbeatz released the Sawfside mixtape to critical acclaim. Within its first week, the tape became Apple Music’s “album of the week,” soon followed by a music video for Hell of a Night.

His talent and work ethic speak for themselves, I can only say that it’s out of this world, and I truly believe that Mashbeatz is just getting started. We can’t wait to see what else he has in store for us, it’s bound to be a crazy year.

It’s been a hot minute since we last heard from Notshi but he promises that the silence is coming to an end.

The Mafikeng rapper has had fans excited over the prospects of new music. From sharing snippets in the studio, to finally posting a question to followers about releasing a project. “An EP just for the culture?” he asked to which they gladly agreed.

Notshi’s come up was truly one for the books, from the days of House Party Diss (those who know, know) to working with Motswako trailblazers such as HHP, Dj Lemonka, as well as Khuli Chana on multiple occasions. It’s unknown what really stood in the way of the Killah Bee’s rise to stardom, however, we hope it’ll be different this time around.

With no official release date set, fans of the Tlebebe spitter can only hope to hear new music sooner rather than later. For now, the wait for the Truth Be Told EP begins.

Zinoleesky Releases Visual Of “YanYanYan” Off His “Grit & Lust” EP

0

Nigerian street pop pioneer Zinoleesky surprises fans with the much-anticipated visuals for his hit single ‘YanYanYan’ off his number 1 charting EP “Grit & Lust“. Living up to the long-awaited drop, Zino collaborates with award-winning video director TG Omori.

On 2022’s Grit & Lust, Zinoleesky confirms himself as a transcendent star via the power of his storytelling and witty observations. Across eight songs, the singer (born Oniyide Azeez) pulls threads from his life to create a compelling tapestry of the life of a pop star in the middle of a compelling come-up.

Packed with soulful odes and gritty wordplay punctuated by Zinoleesky’s lithe voice, Grit & Lust is not so much a victory lap as it is a testament to where he is right now. “Personal” is an audacious hustler’s anthem that addresses online trolls and his super-sized dreams, while “Yan Yan Yan,” a hypnotic blend of log drums and prickly horns, finds Zinoleesky bigging up himself.

As with everything Zinoleesky, the true clincher on Grit & Lust is how he keeps finding nimble pockets to micro cosmically express elation, angst and acceptance that are alien to the de rigeur of street pop, as he does poignantly on the Ayra Starr-assisted “Many Roads.”
