REVIEW: Mashbeatz Proves He’s the Best Hip Hop Producer on the Continent with New Joint Project with Saudi

Mashbeatz has delivered four joint albums between 2019 and 2023, and the year is just beginning. He has helped to launch the careers of 25K, Tyson Sybatelli and frequent collaborator Thato Saul. Mash also had the whole country jumping on his beat when he made ‘Never Ride’ and its various remixes last year; the first of which brought back former Ambitiouz entertainment rapper and trapster Saudi, to the limelight.

Saudi has ben one of the most elusive SA artists for years since his debut album ‘DRUGS Inc.’ left fans yearning for a sophomore.

Mashbeatz just months after dropping the ‘This Is Religion‘ project serves fans another offering of his eclectic production, and who better than Msotraman to jump on them.

Sawfside‘ sees a less melodic and more grimy side of the trapster who gave us ‘Make You Proud’ ‘Dark Dindy‘ and ‘There She Go.’

The instrumentals follow the path of ‘Never Ride,’ psychedelic and strings heavy, mostly violin and cello loops in between 808s.

The EP features six songs and a bonus, with Pretoria rapper 25k being the only feature on the project, and he proves why that is so on his verse on ‘Go Up.’

Saudi proves his prowess on a trap beat with English or Vernacular all through the project, entering with the energetic ‘Hell Of A Night.

‘Toxic’ could easily be jigsawed into a Roddy Rich album and sit pretty. The song is a juxtaposition to ‘Buy The World,’ the former being a ”heartless player’s” trap anthem, while the latter being a love song about buying his love interest the world in a designers’ store.

That’s not the only juxtaposition on the project as Saudi spits ”Imali isn’t everything” on a song titled ‘Buy The World’ but two songs ago he was singing ”Money is my only problem.”

Away from the flexing Saudi returns to familiar places on ‘Sawfside Demon,’ a melodic vernacular hook on a mellow beat, screams 2016. This song will time capsule fans to ‘Make You Proud.’

Live reggae influenced ‘Money,’ is the most renegade track on the project.

Mash’ production definitely stands out and the chemistry between the beats and Saudi’s vocals give a multi-listen worthy effort.

RODUCTION: 10

LYRICISM:6

FEATURES: 8

COHESION:8

TRANSITION: 8

STRONG POINTS: Mash’s use of soulful minimalism and a mix of classical elements sets him apart from other hip hop producers in the continent, Saudi’s melodies and ability to switch flows and cadences and even languages.

WEAK POINTS: Thematic juxtapositions on certain songs

STRONGEST/ WEAKEST SONG: Buy The World /Cross Breed

TOTAL: 8/10

VERDICT: A worthy welcome for Saudi, builds excitement for later releases, era beginning and not defining.

Port Harcourt Rapper Sknny Announces Return with ‘The Vibe Pack’

0

2022 Hennessy Cypher battle round contestant and Port Harcourt-born lyricist, David Lari, popularly known as Sknny announced the end of his long hiatus from dropping original with a new two singles pack titled ‘The Vibe Pack.’

‘The Vibe Pack’ consists of two singles ‘No Lie’ and ‘Vibing,’ and is the first time ”The Golden Child of Hip Hop” is releasing new official music since his 2021 song pack, ‘Darkest Hour Pack,’ and his first solo effort since 2020’s ‘Young and Clueless.’

Since then we have seen a slew of covers and freestyles from ‘Otis freestyle’ featuring Preacher Kingz and a remake of Drake and Jack Harlow’s ‘Churchill Downs’ featuring Alte rap prodigy Ravington.

‘The Vibe Pack’ alludes a pre-cursor to the new direction Lari is heading with his sound ; Marijuana and chill, feel good lo-fi music.

Wu-tang bars laden, melodic ‘No Lie’ which interpolates Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Lust’ sets the tone with its lo-fi production, is the curtain raiser and the main show is the Tonee C assisted ‘Vibing.’

There’s evident A-Reece and Wu-tang influence off the bat.

Standout bars include “Niggas claim they gangsta but they Poppa Doc.”

“You taking Ls, we pushing P.”

Both instrumentals are alike, “Vibing” housing the more energetic of the two.

#ThrowBackThursday: Late Sound Sultan’s Evergreen “Mathematics” On The ills Of Society

Nigeria, the Giant Of Africa is currently under critical decision making and the tension of its forthcoming election is weighing in on its citizens. Last week we did a throwback on a song that spoke of the ills of the country at the time.

ICYMI: #ThrowBackThursday: 2004, The Eedris Abdulkareem Hip-Hop Era In Nigeria

Today’s throwback is with mixed feelings, we would be looking at one of our favourite songs from the late legendary singer, Sound Sultan. His real name was Olanrewaju Abdul-Ganiu Fasasi. He died of cancer in America on July 11, aged 44.

He had played the game as a schoolboy and became co-owner of Lagos City Stars, a Lagos-based basketball club and 2017 champions. He was an impactful promoter of the sport, which earned him the notable pre-Olympics posthumous tribute.

His music communicated not only melody but deep meaning and reflection. He used his music to fight for social good against poverty, corruption, bad governance and social ills in Nigeria.

After his secondary education, he learnt to play the guitar and was in a band by 1999. He studied Geography and Regional Planning and graduated from Lagos State University in 1999. His first single, Jagbajantis, released in 2000, launched him to stardom. He released four albums under Kennis Music.

On the 20th anniversary of his hit single Mathematics in 2020, he said in an interview: “I feel sad. I don’t want to be making money from the ills of society. I am not like that. The song was meant to raise awareness and correct some things; that those things are still happening 20 years after makes me sad. That song should have gone extinct by now, but some people have made sure that the song will be evergreen.”

His dynamism led to a partnership with his elder brother who had influenced him artistically. They founded Naija Ninjas, an organisation that included a record label, production outfit and clothing line. He released Back From The Future (2010) under the new label.

Sound Sultan collaborated with local and international stars. He was involved in Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean’s Welcome to Haiti: Creole 101, with fellow Nigerian artists, 2face Idibia and Faze. He worked with Jean on two other projects: King of My Country (2009) and People Bad (2012).

He was made a UN Ambassador for Peace, in 2012, for his exemplary lifestyle and career. He was not a showy star and was known for his modesty.  He lived above scandals in an entertainment sphere corrupted by scandals. In 2014, he produced and acted in the comedy movie Head Gone, which featured well-known Nigerian comedians, including Akpororo, Basketmouth and Pappy Luwe. After a break, he released the rap single Remember in 2015. His eighth and last album was launched on YouTube in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

He made a name for himself as a singer, songwriter and recording artist. Regarded as one of the pioneers of hip-hop music in Nigeria, he started as a rapper but worked in various music genres including R&B, Afrobeat, soul and Fuji music. We would like to remind you of his hit track which was basically a street anthem upon its release in 2000.

We present to you Sound Sultan’s evergreen “Mathematics” (Jagbajantis).

K.O Goes After Ntukza, Lady Du, & The President In New Single

0

K.O had a tremendous 2022 with the release of his hit single, SETE featuring Young Stunna and Blxckie, taken off Skhanda Republic 3. The song dominated the airwaves and found it’s way to our playlists, proving that K O is a force to be reckoned with and won’t be stopped by anyone. You’ll recall in 2022 when Big Zulu fired shots at some SA Hip Hop superstars, K.O being one of them, to which he swiftly responded to the “Imali eningi” hitmaker and shut the noise.

Brothers become rivals

Following Teargas’ split between the late 2000s and the early 2010’s, it’s speculated that the establishment of Cashtime Life by K.O and Ma-E is what caused tension within the group, later forcing Ntukza (real name Bantu Hanabe) to distance himself. Words were exchanged, bars too, later sparking a beef between Ntukza and K.O.

Right on the heels of the SR3 (Skhanda Republic 3) release in September 2022, Ntukza addressed K.O’s claims a song that they were beefing without cause. “Mina noNtukza just ended up beefin’ for no reason, he was a brother I needed, iTeargas namanj’ would be the hottest every season,” rapped the Skhanda god in The Light. “K.O said we beefing for no reason on a song is absolute B.S, tell him I said so,” responded Ntukza in a tweet.

Fast forward to a few months later, K.O is addressing all the shots he’s received from entertainer, Lady Du, as well as Ntukza and his wife, in a new song. The newly released freestyle, titled Forecast 23, is a bar-heavy head bobber where K.O also puts to rest fans’ hopes of a Teargas reunion, speaking on his beef with Ntukza.

Setting the record straight

The former Teargas members haven’t seen eye to eye for a number of years. K.O speaks his mind and comes at Ntukza head-on. “Every time I’m thinkin’ you wiser ntwana you prove me wrong, asik’phenduli noma ungatshintsha uyibhari eyikhuluma iyodwa.” [Every time I’m thinking you wiser brother you prove me wrong, we don’t respond to you because you’re a fool talking to yourself.]

Dancer and entertainer, Lady Du, is served a round of shots as well. You may remember when the singer and dancer mocked K.O’s hit song, SETE, with claims that it failed to reach gold status despite its commercial success.

“Sneak dissin’ is some s#&! I don’t want to see a lady do (Lady Du), khul’ uyek’ iy’tshele and be a lady tuu,” raps K.O, “You posted in your story uzama uk’claimer ukuthi iSETE wasn’t gold but then a day or two RISA yathi platinum, how’d that made you look?” [Sneak dissing is something I don’t want to see a lady do, stop it with the drama and be a lady please. You posted in your story claiming that SETE wasn’t gold but then a day or two RISA said it’s platinum, how’d that made you look?]

He went on to question her music career and its success,  or lack thereof. Check out some fan reactions.

2023 Forecast

K.O also goes after President Ramaphosa, addressing the Phala Phala saga without mincing words. He’s just getting started, and if this is how the Caracara hitmaker chooses to usher in a new year, we look forward to seeing what else he has in store for us. “2023 I will be addressin’ everythin’, I’m talkin’ full disclosure, I’m expressin’ everythin’.”

Fans are still bumping SR3 and K.O is enjoying another return where he’s hungrier and more aggressive, unapologetic, and ready to go at it with anyone that chooses to challenge him. Who’s to say we won’t get a response from Ntukza? We’re just here to absorb the music and we can’t wait to see what other tricks K.O has up his sleeve. Definitely more music and shows, there’s no stopping him. Tell me what you think in the comments, and check out some more reactions on K.O’s latest scorcher, Forecast 23.

#WomanCrushWednesday: @CleoIceQueen Multiple Award-Winning Zambian Rapper Who Also Got Signed To Def Jam Africa.

Our woman crush for this week is the beautiful, hardworking and talented Cleo Ice Queen.

Clementina Mulenga (born 14 June 1989), professionally known as Cleo or Cleo Ice Queen is a Zambian-born hip-hop recording artist and television and radio, presenter. She has been a Proflight Zambia brand ambassador, and a Maximum Diva Woman Condom brand ambassador. She is best known for her role in Big Brother Africa (The chase) in 2013 and is the 2015 winner of AFRIMMA Best Female in Southern Africa, and the 2017 winner of Best Female in the SunFm Kwacha Music Awards.

Cleo got her moniker “Ice Queen” from her love of jewellery, which is known as “ice” in hip-hop slang. Cleo was also featured in the 2014 March issue of a Nigerian Magazine VL! Magazine as the cover story.

Cleo is the third of a family of 5 with two brothers and two sisters. Cleo’s love for hip-hop began when she was six years old. She began her singing career when she was 11 years old, and at that age, her passion for the entertainment industry began. In Cleo’s own words, she says that she wanted to be behind the microphone from the time she was 4 years old. Cleo used to perform at her own parties starting with her 4th birthday. Cleo had her first studio experience while at Banani International School where the school principal built a recording studio at the school. At the age of 16, Cleo recorded and released her first single Hands Up.

Cleo started her music career in 2011 and the following year she released a single titled “Big Dreams” which featured JK. It was a nationwide hit. Cleo was then featured in Khuli Chana’s official “Tswa Daar” song remix which also featured Ice Prince, Maggz, Navio, AKA and Reason. Cleo’s debut album was released in December 2016 and titled Geminice. Which has 14 songs and the theme of the album is inspired by her Gemini star sign. One part of the album has seven sentimental and lyrical songs, while the other seven songs are fun-loving and upbeat, with party anthems like the Urban Hype featured “Turn Up”, “Addicted” and “Autobahn“. Cleo released another single in December 2016 titled “Soldier” produced by Kekero, a melodic side of rap. In the song, she talks about the appreciation of an African man and this was Cleo’s inspiration. All women have that one Soldier in their lives be it fathers, brothers, spouses, or nephews and this song is one way or another dedicated to them.

In 2013 Cleo represented Zambia during the eighth season of the Big Brother Africa reality television series, produced by Endemol for M-Net. It began on 26 May 2013, running for 91 days and ended on 25 August 2013. Cleo was in the house for 91 days and she came out as the runner-up from Dillish who won 2013’s The Chase season. In 2015, SuperSport launched a football magazine show called Bola Yapa Zed focusing only on Zambian football and Cleo was chosen to be the presenter.

Introducing Coke Studio at a glittering preview event in Lusaka, Cleo said: “Making music is an amazing journey, and Coke Studio really shows the talent, effort and fun that artists put into their craft. I’m just so pleased that Zambian music fans can now have a chance to share that passion on QTV.”

— Cleo speaking in an interview.

On 22 September 2016, Cleo was the first Zambian artist to be picked for Season 2 of Coke Studio, a music television series in Africa where artists are given the opportunity to create something new and exciting. Cleo the lady of rap, together with the lady of house music, Bucie teamed up with super producer Mr Kamera, singer-songwriter, Les-Ego and master sound engineer, Wilson. The song, “Simunye” (“We are one”) was a massive hit, talking about African royalty, unity and oneness with a touch of Cleo’s Zambian tongue, Nyanja and a touch of South African native tongue, Xhosa. This song shows how music has no language barriers.

On 21 May 2017 Cleo was a special guest at the official launch of the African Hip Hop Awards at Chez Intemba in Lusaka.

On January 21, 2022, Cleo took to her Instagram page to announce her welcome to Dej Jam Recordings. An excerpt from her post reads… Thank you @defjamafrica and @umgsa for welcoming me to the family 🙏🏾 let’s make history, let’s do amazing things . HipHop is alive!!!!
