This is not a drill; Kenyan rap group Wakadinali has finally dropped the highly anticipated ”Sikutambui” video. If you know anything about Kenyan drill, you recognise them as best in the game.

The trio comprises a slick Scar Mkadinali, hard-hitting Domani Munga and laid-back Sewersydaa. The group took over the airwaves with their hit songs, putting the Kenyan drill on the map. Wakadinali are among the most popular rap groups in East Africa thanks to their consistent releases and raw style. They also don’t believe in artist censorship or creative control by corporates.

Wakadinali’s Scar, Domani Munga and Sewersydaa on stage.

Wakadinali affiliates with the streets under the name Rong Rende. The collective comprises producers, directors, visual artists and other rap artists. The group works together to push and establish the brand.

Rong Rende refers to a group you don’t want to mess with in sheng. They have continuously worked hard to make Wakadinali a household name and one of Kenya’s best rap groups.

Wakadinali’s ZozaNation

With humble beginnings as underground artists, the trio dreamed of building an artist-friendly record label. This led them to work hard in showcasing not only their rhyme ability but also their management acumen.

They finally set up ZozaNation, their management and distribution company. The move proved successful with the signing of Dyana Cods, who established herself as one of the best female rappers in Kenya.

Sikutambui draws heavily from the street experience of Eastlands estates, where the group members hail from. With heavy sheng usage, the track highlights the experience of coming from the East.

The video brings the energetic song to life, exhibiting the group’s undeniable charisma and talent. Anchored in simplicity, it focuses on their live performances to allow the audience to view the authenticity with a raw and unfiltered aesthetic.

The video is quickly gaining traction, garnering an impressive view count. This is a testament to the groups growing influence and popularity. They have solidified their position in the game and left fans highly anticipating their next project.

REVIEW: Kayode is ‘Still Figuring Life’ on New EP

After the success of his trending hit ‘Live Forever’ in 2021, Abeokuta born Nigerian singer and rapper Oluwakayode Oyetoro, popularly known as Kayode dropped a slew of singles that although successful, didn’t quite hit the level of popularity amongst Nigerian mainstream audiences. Fast forward two years after ‘Live Forever’ and Kayode and his ‘The Kay Gang’ collective shared the 24 year old’s debut mainstream project with fans on the 12th of May 2023.

The project which serves as his mainstream debut, and a follow up to 2020’s ‘Playtime is Over EP,’ consists of seven songs that Kay Kay describes as “emotional works of art that speaks to the beauty and complexities of the human condition.”

The EP features signature 808 and hi hat laced emo-drill production he has come to identify with since his 2021 breakout single ‘Live Forever.’

The EP is ushered in by the very familiar female voice tag saying an ecstatic “Kay Kayyy,” immediately the 808s drop you can tell it’s a Kayode song, he has managed to carve a niche for himself with his beat choices.

The somber ‘Fill Me Up’ serves as the intro— both a prayer and a manifesto to “level up and free my soul” by a troubled young mind trying to escape their reality.

The following track ups the tempo from a solemn reflection cut to a more Afro inclined ode to a love interest who he is telling to be patient for their time to be spoiled— titled ‘Baby Relax.”

The melodies on this track are reminiscent of another ‘Kay Kay,’ Neville record’s Khaid.

Previously released “All I Need,” is more similar to the much familiar, ‘Live Forever’ with the artist’s pitch going one octave higher

‘On My Mind,’ follows the same path, but it takes it up a notch, being less repetitive and redundant on the hook, and employs more melodies on the production and delivery.

The song speaks of responsibility, trials and tribulations while trying to navigate life in Lagos, in the underground seen of the music industry and keeping his relationship with his girl afloat.

“I had opps outside of my house on a Monday night,” Psycho YP flourishes on the melodic drill beat as Kay Kay recruits both YP and Odumodublvck to deliver two very energetic verses to spice up lead single ‘Blessings.’

“Take my belt when I am not Israel (Adesanya)?” raps Declan Rice rapper, Odumodublvck, to end his very violent, threat filled verse. Kay Kay is relegated to just the hook on this one.

‘I Don’t Want Your Love,’ is a lady’s favorite, despite it’s ironic theme of a Lagos playboy vois of emotions due to past hurt.

The album closes out with ‘Chop This Life,’ a victory lap manifesto, a somewhat more upbeat version of the intro.

The strength of this EP is Kayode’s ability to glide effortlessly on the beats without seeming to try to do too much, minimalism constitutes the beauty of Oyetoro’s music.

One downside about the EP is the almost monotonous production, excess use of 808s and a lack of sonic variety.

Highlights: Psycho YP and Odumodublvck’s verses, I don’t want your love.

Lowlights: could use better penning and more versatility in production and melodies.

Production: 7
Lyricism: 7
Cohesion: 10
Transition: 9
Features:10

TOTAL: 8.6/10

VERDICT: Shows signs of an artist who is capable of so much more, running his first lap, we are excited to see what Kay Kay will blossom into in the future. A strong introduction to the mainstream.

Flvme Has His Equipment Stolen, “I Got Robbed”

While in high spirits working on new music planned to drop this winter, Flvme became the unfortunate victim of crime and had his music equipment stolen from him.

“I got robbed today, laptop and music gone,” tweeted the devastated rapper this morning. Though the who and how is not known at this point, many are glad Flvme is alive and safe.

https://twitter.com/FlvmeSA/status/1657286698198261762?t=shMG-2pe8O0f30MiDMEq_A&s=19
https://twitter.com/FlvmeSA/status/1657324920030806017?t=IrxQsN-j-QJBMB2pOWrJaQ&s=19

He received an outpour of messages and comments from fans and industry mates alike, expressing their support while also happy that he’s still with us.

This is unfortunately not the first time an artist faces such a devastating loss of their equipment to theft. Late rapper, HHP revealed that he once opened his home studio for young artists to use, only to have his hard drives stolen, never to be seen again.

We sympathize with Flvme and hope that through this ordeal, he finds a silver lining and as he said “what God has in store.”

23′ Blaq Street: 5 Times Blaqbonez Has Gone HAM on a song in 2023.

Emeka Akumefule did not come to the game to play. Before getting his major deal with Chocolate City in 2018, Emeka had already dropped 7 projects and was showing no signs of slowing down. His mixtape ‘Last Time Under’ like the title prophesied was really his las time under the radar as it garnered him a Falz and MI collaboration on ‘Bad Boy,’ and an AQ Co-Sign, which later became a contract with both the latter’s 100 Crowns and the former’s Chocolate City. Since his major label debut album ‘Bad Boy Blaq’ in 2018, Akumefule has dropped three more projects and two deluxes in five years, killing features and collaborations along the way.

In big 2023, Blaqbonez has already been on more than five songs, as a feature and as a lead artiste respectively.

Below are the 5 times Mr. BBC absolutely went HAM on a track in 2023:

BREAKING THE YOKE OF LOVE:

Pastor Blaqbonez began the year prepping for the second annual edition of his ‘Breaking The Yoke of Love’ Valentine’s day crusade (concert). The song if the same title where he recruited the services of The Voice Nigeria alumni Chike and emerging vocal Queen Raybekah to offer a magnificent pro-polygamy, and anti-exclusivity in romance choral anthem.

The choir and Chike set the stage for Blaq to deliver a stunning verse that music fans can forget in a hurry, I mean who begins a verse with “fvvk Cinderella, fvvk Beauty and the beast…”?

WO WO REMIX:

Arguably the most jumped on instrumental of the year, Blaqbonez was more fortunate than the rest to feature on the original version by Minz, also featuring BNXN fka Buju.

I know we all remember the stellar “Mr. knackademua said he wouldn’t pay us, after all the work we put in for Lagos” verse. And that shot at a certain Mavins artiste, “we the ones disturbing artists on labels…don’t compare an AK to a damn Luger.”

Blaqbonez delivered a calm but braggadocios and audacious blessings checklist of a verse. Alluding to his success from his legal hustles with the line:

“Rich as f**k and we still stacking, six bed mansion for this Lekki and I no kill person.”

LOTTO:

Nigerian singer Lago recruited Blaq for his single ‘Lotto’ where Blaq dusts up his patois alter-ego Mr. Boombastic and delivers a ragga verse about head and other luxuries of life, especially those on four wheels.

HALLELUJAH:

“Buju say he wan race me, Tell am we go do am unfailingly, yeah
CKay bought a AMG,
So it’s three bad boys with V8 engines.”

This verse is still making waves around social media, Blaq mazes between autotuned trap, so Yoruba laden singing in a few unforgettable seconds.

May has been quite busy for Emeka as the Collab with fellow OAU alumni CKay is just the second of three releases this month and we’re not even halfway through the month.
That’s an amazing but an unsurprising feat as Emeka is known as the epitome of music business hustle in west Africa, if not the whole continent.

CINDERELLA GIRL:

Legendary American rapper Ludacris alongside other American artistes like Vic Mensa have been in and out of the Gold Coast since the West African country announced the year of return in 2019, and have been working with African artists.

Blaqbonez revealed in a tweet that the ‘Chicken and Beer’ rapper’s team flew him out to Ghana to work with him.

https://twitter.com/BlaqBonez/status/1657019379605749762?t=30PNVgrXvMBbIV4dS9krYQ&s=19

Raw and uncut Blaqbonez rapping about fellatio once again, President Blaq turns the Disney fairytale princess to a city girl on this one and Luda (I know all of you just screamed that name in your head) delivered a monster of the verse, back like he never left.

Hard to not imagine what he must have cooked up with Sarkodie, as they have been spotted together in the studio several times.
