HipHop Lifestyle: DJ Spinall And His Signature Cap

DJ Spinall is a famous disk jockey and can be said to be one of the best DJs in the Nigerian Entertainment Industry.

Dj Spinall’s real name is Sodamola Desmond Oluseye and he was born on the 2nd of June. He is a graduate of Electrical Electronics Engineering. DJ Spinall is known for his signature caps, and he’s gotten himself the nickname “The Cap” which is also the name of his Record Label.

So many speculations have been going on regarding why he wears the Caps, which are of course made of different traditional African materials on his outfits. He’s already used to this unique fashion style that you hardly see him without the cap even while in English attire.

But, Spinall disclosed the reason behind his caps. According to him, he said “The idea behind TheCAP came from when I was a kid I used to watch my Dad dress up and finish off with a Cap before he steps out to functions, now in today’s world. The fashion idea is also to celebrate African Prints; I have local African fabric prints from all the African countries I have been to DJ.”

Here are some pictures of DJ Spinall looking so fresh and cool with his numerous caps.

ManCrushMonday: Ajebo Hustlers – A Rapper & A Singer Emerges Nigeria’s Best Duo/Group

The recently concluded Sound City MVP Awards 2023 had Ajebo Hustlers grab a win as the Best Duo.

The music group, Ajebo Hustlers – made up of rapper George Dandeson (aka Knowledge), and singer Isaiah Precious (aka Piego) were founded in 2010, began their musical adventure in 2015 with the release of their debut song, “Bole and Fish Remix.” They are a pair whose songs use snappy phrases and slang that guarantee listener satisfaction.

They have gained popularity around the nation by using Afro-highlife in their songs to thrill their individual followers.

In February 2021, Ajebo Hustlers teamed up with Omah Lay for a Valentine gift to their fans. The track was named “Pronto” accompanied by a Clarence Peter-directed and colourful video—with 3.2 million views on Youtube, this is their highest view on Youtube so far. Pronto cemented their entrance into the Lagos market, crowning the new status with an album was just a matter of time.

The Avante Entertainment signed artists further cemented their place in the music industry with their win at the Sound City MVP this year.

And for this reason, they are our ManCrushMonday for this week.

Rapper, AKA Passes On

It’s a sad day in South African Hip Hop as we learn of the passing of one of the country’s music pioneers, Kiernan Forbes, known to many as AKA.

It’s learnt that the rapper had gone down to Durban for a show he was booked at and went to dine at a restaurant later that evening with some friends. Upon leaving the establishment, Forbes was seen by onlookers and CCTV footage walking across the street to his car but was met with bullets that ultimately ended his life.

Another tragic turn to this was the revelation of another casualty, Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, a well-known figure in South African music and entertainment. It appears that Tibz was caught in the crossfire where he too lost his life.

The gunmen fled the scene shortly after, leaving onlookers with the shocking realization that one of the country’s biggest rappers and entertainers had just been gunned down right in front of them.

While police and paramedics were soon dispatched to secure the scene, it was unfortunately too late so save either one of the men, who sadly succumbed to their injuries. The news reached social media in an instant, with many fans and industry mates expressing their shock and disbelief over the news.

The rapper’s parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, shared a statement on his social media pages confirming his death and showing appreciation for the support they’ve received. The family went on to ask for privacy as they process and deal with the tragic news of their son’s passing.

We’re told investigations are underway as the Durban police department handles two cases of murder.

As we know, AKA was in the process of releasing an album, Mass Country, expected to come out later in February 2023. We will keep you updated on any developments. Our hearts go out to his loved ones and the entire Hip Hop fraternity during this difficult time.

Long live, Supa Mega, live long.

Nasty C Debuts First Song of 2023, ‘Blackout’

0

Zulu Man With Some Power is back with his first single of the year titled ‘Blackout.’ The Durban born emcee who has been shuffling between Mzansi and the United States in preparation for his fourth full length studio album, bursts into 2023 with a song about the energy situation in South Africa for the past few months.

The song hints the situation of South African cities going through a blackout for now and Eskom, the primary energy company in the country had advised ‘loadshedding’ as a coping strategy for the energy crisis. In repsonse to that, the President, Cyril Ramaphosa called a state of emergency to handle the situation.

‘Blackout’ is an uptempo trap song with some braggadoccio bars on the second verse and clever metaphoric references tothe energy crisis in the first, click the link below to have a listen.

A Look Into Sjava’s #Isibuko Album & Live Medley

0

With just a couple of weeks following the release of his latest offering, Sjava is working tirelessly to give fans and listeners an unforgettable sonic experience.

To date, Isibuko has garnered close to 12 million streams across multiple platforms including Spotify (3.75Million), YouTube (3.7Million), and Apple Music (3.6Million). And the numbers just keep rising!

#Isibuko album streams

Coming off the release of his album, the KwaZulu-Natal native was met with positive reviews and reactions from supporters, so much so that the trend #WhenSjavaSaid found its way to out social media timelines and had fans raving over his songs.

To keep the momentum going, Sjava and his team offered fans a brief breakdown of each song from the album that explains the message and/ or his thought process at the time of penning the lyrics. Take a look (to be updated):

Now that we have a better understanding of the songs, I believe that we’ll be able to appreciate the music Sjava gave us in this album. Bare in mind that not many artists do this, let alone share lyrics to their songs. This is going the extra mile, ensuring that you shed light over the confusion and misunderstanding.

Essentially, Isibuko is about healing and growing, facing your flaws, accepting them, and moving towards rehabilitation. As a public figure, Sjava’s personal life tends to be exposed to outside forces that, knowingly or unknowingly, add to the burdens and frustrations of his celebrity. He touches on the various parts of his life, speaking on his flaws and failures, looking to rectify his mistakes and shortcomings.

The other day, I was thinking about how amazing an artist Sjava is, and how he seems to wear his heart on his sleeve in every song that he writes. He’s shown this to us in every musical offering he’s released and been part of. Every performance is an out of body experience and he continues to up the ante.

Still on the run promoting the album, Sjava offers listeners a live medley of Isibuko where he performs songs from the introspective body of work. “We’ve created this live medley for Isibuko just to thank you for your support over the past week or so,” he expressed.

He performs his songs in a dimly lit room. A minimalistic setting, Sjava sings while surrounded by burning candles and a single a full-length mirror placed close by. It’s no mistake that he used white candles as they’ve been known to symbolize hope, new beginnings, purification, peace, and harmony. Let the healing begin.
