It’s safe to assert that Durban is currently the epicenter of South African Trap culture and music. With Blxckie constantly releasing new tracks, the Qwellers keeping the streets vibrant, and Usimamane and Tony Dayimane making waves, 2024 is the perfect year to focus on the Durban rap scene.
One emerging artist catching my attention is AYON, a female rapper hailing from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, who is making significant strides in South African Hip Hop. Today (28 July 2024), she released her third single of the year , titled “Choice Assorted.”
I first discovered AYON( born Ayanda Mfeka) through one of my favorite Twitter music tastemakers and Durban hip hop producer, SiphoMjita, who hinted that a collaboration between AYON and Oriiginelle would be legendary. After listening to AYON, I couldn’t agree more.
My favorite song by the artist, by far, is “The 07th,” released on May 17th. I have always been drawn to boom bap raps combined with lyrical finesse and storytelling—elements that AYON executes exceptionally well in this track.
Her latest release, “Choice Assorted,” however is different from “The 07th”, as it is a trap anthem with heavy, upbeat production. Her braggadocio, style, and flair make this a standout hip hop track that captures the distinctive sound and vibrancy of Durban Hip Hop. In the song, she celebrates her exceptional talent and ability to dominate the music scene with her unique style.
The cover art features the iconic Choice Assorted biscuits, a festive treat for black families across Southern Africa. This choice by AYON likely aims to culturally resonate with audiences across South Africa and beyond.
I look forward to hearing more from AYON in the coming months, as I believe she has the potential to become one of Durban Hip Hop’s most influential and powerful voices. Her versatility in blending the anthropology of old school western hip hop and traditional elements of African Tribal music will set her as a cut above the rest.
