Xavier Thxmas Unveils New Highly Pulsating Single “Inkinga Manje” featuring Nino Fresko

In recent weeks, or perhaps even months, my patterns of music consumption have undergone a significant transformation. I recall a time when I consumed music purely in the spirit of discovery, eagerly awaiting each week’s Spotify Discover Weekly playlist to unearth raw, emerging talent within the South African music landscape. But lately, I’ve gravitated toward the familiar ; revisiting songs and albums that I already know, merely to stay afloat. Concerning, right? Especially for a self-proclaimed music fiend and someone deeply entrenched in music journalism. Perhaps this shift is a symptom of age catching up with me, or maybe it’s simply the consequence of an increasingly hectic schedule. Whatever the cause, one thing remains steadfast: my love for music is unwavering. Amid this change in my listening habits, one artist managed to disrupt my routine : Xavier Thxmas, a Hip Hop and Trap artist hailing from eMalahleni, a town in the neighboring Mpumalanga province of South Africa. He first caught my attention with his track “Shukela,” featuring Flow Jones Jr and LaCabra—a song I stumbled upon through LaCabra’s Instagram page, immediately prompting me to rush to Spotify for a listen. Who would’ve thought Instagram would become the new tastemaker?

Shukela Music Video by Xavier Thxmas, Flow Jones Jr & LaCabra

Released on June 7, 2024, “Shukela” is a high-energy Trap anthem, driven by an infectious hook and a pulsating production filled with heavy, dance-inducing rhythms. What truly captivated me was LaCabra’s verse, which I initially discovered through a snippet on Instagram only to find that the whole song is truly ethereal. And yes, kids, visuals do indeed matter. “Shukela” showcases the three rappers boasting about their fashion sense, lyrical prowess, and the strides they’ve made in their careers. From the moment I heard it, I made it a point to follow Xavier Thxmas closely, eager to see how he would build on this momentum. You can imagine my excitement when I saw that his next release would feature one of my favorite South African Hip Hop discoveries of 2024: Nino Fresko

In this track, Xavier and Nino Fresko trade bars about the challenges that accompany fame, using their sharp lyrical skills and rapid-fire flows, all while incorporating local South African languages to narrate their experiences as rising stars under the scrutiny of both media and fans. Their powerful lyricism is further enhanced by thumping bass, booming 808s, and hi-hats, while borrowing unique textures from the Amapiano genre’s iconic log drum.

His fiery rhymes ooze a striking quality better resolved by the track’s insightful outro.

As always, Juma Vybz has an intriguing story, and his latest delivers a powerful one. “The inspiration for ‘No Option’ is from the heart. It is my untold story. I have been through a lot in the space of a year, and this was my opportunity to air these experiences. It hasn’t been easy, but I had no option but to rise from the ashes again. Hence, the title.” He adds, “The main theme of this song covers a personal choice to not fit into the boundaries society has set for me while being okay with that. Rather than tear myself down, I want to use it to strengthen myself. The deeper message is to leave yourself no option; just keep pushing towards the light and you will rise above your situation.”

Director Skeet 89’s visual representation of this intense experience mirrors the rapper’s emotions with its sepia-tinged hue. Juma Vybz ignites each scene with his explosive flows as he recounts pieces of his ordeal. It’s a stunning journey, unfolding across graffiti-covered blocks, restaurants, and parks that showcase Juma’s swag. ‘No Option’ is poised to be a soft reintroduction to Juma Vybz’s exciting style, highlighting a new era for the versatile MC. Under his reborn image, the rapper plans to drop a fresh batch of Afrobeats. While fans eagerly await his next move, Juma Vybz continues to work with his mentor, Ghanaian producing titan Zodivc, as he finalizes his forthcoming EP.

Lord YG Shares Two Gripping Hip-Hop Stories: ‘Better Days’ & ‘I’m Gone’

0

If it feels like it was only yesterday you heard of Lord YG, it’s because it was. Just a few months ago, the rapper announced himself as a rising industry force. He made huge waves, captivating everyone with then-new singles ‘Bittersweet’ and later ‘Steeze and Vibes.’ Now, he returns with two more tracks: ‘Better Days’ and ‘I’m Gone,’ and they do not disappoint!

Of the two, ‘Better Days’ bears the torch of hope. Lord YG’s heart unfolds over soothing piano keys as he reminisces about the days when he had it rough. Thankfully, he never let the ball drop and kept pushing: “I came far. I cannot quit,” he asserts in the hook. Each verse he lays on the Faygo production evokes memories of the rapper’s past and ambition, uplifting audiences through a flurry of well-crafted bars. While ‘Better Days’ uplifts, ‘I’m Gone,’ produced by Zodivc, seeks to empower. It is a testament to the power of resilience, making it the ultimate Survivor Story. Contrary to the former, its piano keys are more somber. They are expressive of Lord YG’s journey through the wire. Here, the rapper excites with relatable narratives, sharing his battle scars. He manifests the personality of a wise sage through a catchy hook that breeds inspiration.

Both songs deliver stellar wordplay and rhymes that will pique the interest of Hip-Hop enthusiasts. They showcase Lord YG’s refreshing style and knack for gripping street tales, building anticipation for his upcoming project. Speaking of what’s to come, the rapper told the press, “I am currently finalizing my first major project. It will capture the essence of my life’s experiences and journey through deeply personal narratives.”

After being immersed in music since childhood, it was only a matter of time before Lord YG, born Festus Aziamakpor, blew! His gripping street tales–inspired by Accra’s hard-knock life and vibrant culture–offer an exciting glimpse of his youthful yet old soul. Though relatively new, Lord YG’s music, a striking blend of Hip-Hop and Afro-tinted sounds and anything in between, is already setting the airwaves ablaze.

Novl Unveils New Single titled “Skoloto”

X, formerly known as Twitter, is my favorite social media platform —and for good reason. This platform has introduced me to some of South Africa’s finest hip hop talents, with one standout being Novl, a sharp lyricist and rapper from Polokwane, South Africa, the same town that produced the legendary Tuks Senganga. My first encounter with Novl was two or three years ago during a #Rap4Eatzz space, where his impressive freestyle immediately caught my attention. Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to call myself a loyal member of The Book Club, the community Novl fondly named his supporters.

Image shot by Katlego Mongatane

Fresh off delivering a captivating performance, showcasing his lyrical adroitness on Oriiginelle’s16s & Some,” Novl is back with his new single, “Skoloto,” which honors his hometown of Polokwane in Limpopo. Produced by TriggaNasty and mastered by Nacos Official, “Skoloto” builds on the momentum Novl has been creating since October 2023, when he began hinting at his forthcoming project, “Clichés and Realities.”The project has already been teased through two preludes, “Costly Sacrifices” and “Borrowed Time.” Novl’s contributions to the South African hip hop scene are becoming increasingly significant, with standout moments like his electrifying appearance on StayLow’sNo Paperwork Freestyle” in August 2023. He has also collaborated with several South African hip hop heavyweights, including Tyson Sybateli, Wordz, Trophy, and Venomraps, to name a few.

Novl’s No Paperwork Freestyle

Skoloto” deeply resonates with South African listeners, particularly for its use of the phrase “Sam Sokolo,” a nod to the beloved South African TV show about four township taxi business owners struggling to survive. The phrase “Sam Sokolo” holds even more profound cultural weight—featured in the song’s hook, it symbolizes the tenacity and determination that define South African life. Echoing the sentiments of Tuks Senganga’s track “Bona Fela,” “Sam Sokolo” reflects the fight to push forward and persevere despite challenges. This rich cultural reference adds depth to Novl’s music, turning “Skoloto” into a powerful piece that speaks directly to the lived experiences of his community.

Skoloto,” meaning “debt” in English, encapsulates Novl’s connection to his roots through its use of local slang, evocative writing, and impactful messaging. The song provides insight into his current reality as an artist juggling life’s challenges while staying committed to his craft. What sets Novl apart from his peers is his dedication to creating music that encourages listeners to confront their own truths- as seen on his debut album HMB,LMR– an acronym for “Hold My Beer , Let Me Rap.”

Listen to HMB,LMR here

This release sets the stage for Novl’s upcoming album, “Clichés & Realities”,  anticipated to drop in the fourth quarter of the year. The title of the project reflects Novl’s philosophy: while he acknowledges the allure of fantasies, he believes that true growth arises from facing life directly, without the comfort of illusion. This ethos runs through all his music, particularly “Skoloto,” where he urges his audience to take control of their reality rather than escape it. Knowing how enigmatic and deliberate Novl’s creative process is, I can only wonder how his upcoming album will unfold. But one thing is certain—every move he makes is meticulously planned.

T1mmy’s Debut EP “It’s Only Us” Is A Chilling Street Manual

The rising rapper’s debut EP sees him breathe life into Ghana’s dying art of raw, unadulterated Hip-Hop. Stream or download “It’s Only Us” across all major digital platforms here: https://tiememusicdistro.lnk.to/ITSONLYUS

T1mmy might be young, but he has a wealth of experience in street matters. Since venturing into the world of rhymes, the Accra MC has been electrifying fans with his raw style, as evident on his debut EP, “It’s Only Us.” A chilling shot at the fakes, the rapper, who dazzled with singles like ‘Steeze and Vibes’ and ‘Nemesis,’ wants to make himself crystal clear. And he does. With two features and four songs, the rising rapper delivers like a 12-cylinder engine. He eloquently breaks his experiences in the trenches into quotables that the streets can’t do without, and we are all for it.

“Boys nyɛ real, never let that shit out of your mind” is one of the lines T1mmy delivers that deserves to be plastered on every street corner. His gritty opener, ‘Trust Issues’ (produced by Gloyo), quickly sets itself aside as a certified anthem for hustlers. If their opps thought they were cold, the T1mmy and SRT Gwalla are colder. The two captivate with well-pieced lines that put their experiences on the streets in perspective and their rivals to shame. UK-based artist SRT Gwalla, in particular, weighs in beautifully about his experiences in London, corroborating the insanity the two have had to live through despite being worlds apart.

Next up is the eponymous Faygo-produced, ‘It’s Only Us.’ T1mmy and fellow rapper Lord YG team up for this banging track, delving into why they distanced themselves from their wayward brothers. Like photographers in a darkroom, the two develop a vivid perspective for their actions, pitching the tent for the next song, ‘Won’t Understand.’ T1mmy goes solo on Hokatiwi light piano keys, wearing his heart on the sleeves. He maintains his aggression and grace on the self-explanatory track, drilling deep with lines that encapsulate why he’s scheming and leaving everyone puzzled.

T1mmy saves the best for the last. The pre-released ‘Priceless,’ another surefire hit produced by Gloyo, completes the rapper’s scintillating journey from rocky paths to smooth roads. It’s a track that echoes the promise of T1mmy and highlights his growth, exuding a sense of satisfaction whenever he sings, “You know the feeling be priceless. When you got it all out from the gutters.” The rapper’s tale cuts deep, revealing his authenticity through articulate delivery and fascinating storytelling.

As far as dropping gems go, T1mmy is only getting started. He is committed to catching fans off guard and channeling his authenticity into something special. “It’s Only Us” is a victory lap for the rapper, setting the stage for a promising future. While that slowly unravels, Timothy ‘T1mmy’ Kpogo plots to go harder than before.
