Renowned artist Sizwe Alakine,  previously known as Reason, just released his much-anticipated 8th studio album Audio 2D: Dear Darkie. This album marks a significant shift in his career, as it is the first  hip-hop project he will release under the Sizwe Alakine name, following his transition  into this new chapter as a hip-hop artist. 

After successfully exploring the realms of Amapiano, Sizwe Alakine returns to his hip hop roots with a fresh perspective, reintroducing himself as a versatile, boundary pushing artist. With a reputation for his lyrical depth and unique fusion of African  sounds, this album is expected to further solidify his position as one of South Africa’s  most respected and celebrated musicians.

On September 6, 2024, ZRI (pronounced Zuu-Ree) released his latest single, “Mud,” featuring LaCabra and Blue Pappi, members of the hip-hop collective “The Qwellers.” This release follows a string of recent projects by the Pretoria-based R&B and alternative rap artist, including his mixtape “Thank God For The Sun”, which dropped in May, and his two-track single “Lehakwe”, released in late July. This statement alone summarizes the main ethos of the song, which  is also captured in its opening moments, with a conversation between two township residents in “Ispitori,” a slang spoken in Pretoria’s townships. This exchange immediately paints a vivid picture of township life: imagine two locals playing cards or hanging out at a neighborhood store, sharing a lively, humorous chat. Through this, ZRI pays reverence to his birthplace and other South African townships.

Blue Pappi’s “Took Me For A Nai”: A Soulful and Melancholic Gem

Undoubtedly, Blue Pappi is a rare gem, with talent so unique it feels almost generational. His ascent to stardom has been nothing short of mesmerizing. Hailing from Ladysmith in KwaZulu Natal, he is the epitome of a multifaceted artist—one whose craft defies easy categorization or confinement. Is he a rapper, a singer, or something beyond? I still can’t quite put him into any one box, which speaks to the depth and range of his artistry.

My first encounter with his music was through Horid The Messiah’s “INKUNZI,” where Blue Pappi made a guest appearance that left me utterly captivated. Intrigued, I immersed myself in his discography, beginning with his EP, “A Voice Like A Sequined Razor Blade”, where the standout track “OH NO!” first caught my ear. Not long after, he released “Mona Lisa,” a single featuring LaCabra and Lowfeye, which remains a personal favorite—perhaps not coincidentally, as it dropped on my birthday, November 4th. From there, I took notice of his work, particularly his compelling verse on LaCabra’s hit single “Dangerous,” featuring Sastii. That infectious trap anthem instantly pulled me deeper into his orbit, turning me into a Qweller super fan.

In 2024, Blue Pappi continued to affirm his prowess, releasing a string of singles, including “Ekhaya” in January, and “Nomalizo,” in March, where he joined forces with fellow Qwellers: LaCabra, Lowfeye, and JustMango. His collaborations are vast and varied, including a memorable verse on Sjava’s Gold-certified love song “Typhoon.” The line crafted by Blue Pappi on the song “Umoya wakho ngathi lwandle ntambama” lingers with me each time I hear it, likening a lover’s aura to the serene embrace of the sea at dusk—proof positive that Zulu rizz is unparalleled. He has also made notable contributions to Lowfeye’s “Mfana kaMakhulu” project, gracing both the titular track “Mfana KaMakhulu” and “Indawo.”

Just last week, on September 6th, uMfana Ohlaza unveiled his latest offering, “Took Me For A Nai.” It’s a brief, two-minute piece of ethereal beauty that frustrates as much as it enchants, due to its brief length, leaving me yearning for more. Produced by Lucent.exe, the track finds Blue Pappi’s voice floating over a melancholic chord progression that conjures a deeply soulful atmosphere. A saxophone, delicately draped over the beginning and end, enhances the hauntingly soothing quality of his vocals, crafting an ambiance that invites a sort of blissful escape. The song feels like a dreamscape, something to be experienced with closed eyes, an invitation to drift away from reality.

To me, the answer lies in the rich tradition of remix culture, especially within Hip Hop. Remixes breathe new life into the original track, merging nostalgia with novelty, creating a soundscape that feels both familiar and fresh. That’s precisely the alchemy at play in the “Honne Remix” by Ziggy4x, featuring Priddy Ugly and Maglera Doe Boy.

Released at the stroke of midnight, the “Honne Remix” brings together a vibrant blend of artistic voices and cultural perspectives. I like to call Nino Fresko “The Fresh Prince of Bethlehem”—and you might wonder why, but my reasons are solid. To begin with, his name, “Nino Fresko,” translates to “Fresh Boy” in Spanish. And if that isn’t fitting enough, he hails from a quaint farming town named Bethlehem in South Africa’s Free State Province. His music exudes a fresh, sonically thrilling energy, complemented by his distinctive fashion sense. Do you see the connection now? Of course you do. You might have just experienced a “Eureka moment.”

“The Fresh Prince of Bethlehem” is back with yet another hit, titled “Dilong.” This release follows the success of his highly acclaimed debut LP, “Fly For Magriza”, which completely won me over when it dropped in February . It’s often a Herculean task for an artist to equal or surpass their magnum opus—an accolade I believe “Fly For Magriza” deserves despite being his debut—but Nino has defied the odds by harnessing the momentum from his groundbreaking project and releasing “Dilong” , a fiercely captivating, Tsepe-inspired single. Tsepe, for the uninitiated, is a distinctive musical sound rooted in the Free State and Lesotho.

“Dilong” features a catchy and infectious chorus with the Sotho phrase “Re Kene Dilong,” which translates to “We are within” in English, enhancing the song’s overall vibe. A breezy melody, likely produced by a wind instrument, forms the core of the track, giving the instrumental an irresistible, earworm quality that makes one want to whistle along. Even more intriguing is the fact that Nino Fresko designed this cover himself, proving that he is an all-around creative force.

In recent weeks, or perhaps even months, my patterns of music consumption have undergone a significant transformation. I recall a time when I consumed music purely in the spirit of discovery, eagerly awaiting each week’s Spotify Discover Weekly playlist to unearth raw, emerging talent within the South African music landscape. But lately, I’ve gravitated toward the familiar ; revisiting songs and albums that I already know, merely to stay afloat. Concerning, right? Especially for a self-proclaimed music fiend and someone deeply entrenched in music journalism. Perhaps this shift is a symptom of age catching up with me, or maybe it’s simply the consequence of an increasingly hectic schedule. Whatever the cause, one thing remains steadfast: my love for music is unwavering. Amid this change in my listening habits, one artist managed to disrupt my routine : Xavier Thxmas, a Hip Hop and Trap artist hailing from eMalahleni, a town in the neighboring Mpumalanga province of South Africa. He first caught my attention with his track “Shukela,” featuring Flow Jones Jr and LaCabra—a song I stumbled upon through LaCabra’s Instagram page, immediately prompting me to rush to Spotify for a listen. Who would’ve thought Instagram would become the new tastemaker?

Released on June 7, 2024, “Shukela” is a high-energy Trap anthem, driven by an infectious hook and a pulsating production filled with heavy, dance-inducing rhythms. What truly captivated me was LaCabra’s verse, which I initially discovered through a snippet on Instagram only to find that the whole song is truly ethereal. And yes, kids, visuals do indeed matter. “Shukela” showcases the three rappers boasting about their fashion sense, lyrical prowess, and the strides they’ve made in their careers. From the moment I heard it, I made it a point to follow Xavier Thxmas closely, eager to see how he would build on this momentum. You can imagine my excitement when I saw that his next release would feature one of my favorite South African Hip Hop discoveries of 2024: Nino Fresko

Xavier Thxmas has released a follow up single titled “Inkinga Manje,” at midnight , featuring none other than the Fresh Prince of Bethlehem : Nino Fresko, and the production powerhouse, The KidsNextDoor. In this track, Xavier and Nino Fresko trade bars about the challenges that accompany fame, using their sharp lyrical skills and rapid-fire flows, all while incorporating local South African languages to narrate their experiences as rising stars under the scrutiny of both media and fans. Their powerful lyricism is further enhanced by thumping bass, booming 808s, and hi-hats, while borrowing unique textures from the Amapiano genre’s iconic log drum.

The Mpumalanga born rapper has been making strides in his career participating and winning in numerous rap competitions and cyphers such as ShootUrShot, Rockstar Energy Drink Hustle, CottonFest Booth Edition just to name a few. Inspired by the late South African Hip Hop icon Costa Titch, Xavier Thxmas stands poised to become one of South Africa’s most compelling artists.
