Born and raised in the Kingdom of Eswatini, Milliswa is a Marketing and PR creative and Music Journalist passionate about redefining African Music Journalism and Marketing. Her journey as a writer began in high school where she wrote poetry and short stories. However, when she got to University, she merged her love for music, her love for marketing and her love for writing together, molding her into the creative she is today.

For decades, music and fashion have been inexorably intertwined, each serving as a potent form of self-expression and converging into a beautiful art form. The connection between these two domains is irrefutable. Icons like Kanye West have significantly influenced hip hop fashion and culture, extending their reach beyond music to collaborate with esteemed brands such as Adidas and Balenciaga, founding Yeezy, and curating his own fashion shows. Closer to home, Riky Rick has similarly dominated both the music and fashion landscapes in South Africa. As a true fashion trailblazer, he created COTTONFEST, an event celebrating the fusion of music and local fashion, and collaborated with brands like PUMA and Maxhosa, demonstrating his unwavering passion for fashion.

The symbiotic relationship between music and fashion transcends mere collaborations; artists often celebrate their fashion sense within their lyrics. Riky Rick, in the “Whole Thing” remix by Frank Casino, boasted, “Who you know could run the city in Gucci slippers and still show up at the daycare, your night clothes is my day wear,” underscoring his sartorial confidence. Similarly, Kanye West declared in “Champion,” “You don’t see just how fly my style is? I don’t see why I need a stylist when I shop so much I can speak Italian,” emphasizing his unique fashion prowess.

Returning to the motherland, Africa, while there remains a need for more creatives to shape the fashion landscape, it is encouraging to witness projects like Hippy Bambino’s Republic of Karma, a harmonious blend of music and fashion. This initiative is not unprecedented in Southern Africa; LUND (Love Under No Demand) made significant strides in Eswatini with the “LUND FM 82.6” compilation project, featuring top local acts like Amarii, Yung Tmpo, LiveLoveLxnce, Sadboy DLR, and ILOVEMADDONA, showcasing the seamless integration of music and fashion.

Botswana is doing the same with “The Republic of KARMA” ,  a groundbreaking Fashion x Hip Hop collaboration album by the local luxury streetwear brand KARMA by Hippy Bambino. It marks the first instance of a clothing brand in Botswana partnering with a collective of local musicians to create a comprehensive body of work that unites culture through fashion and music. The project’s production, led by award-winning producer Fella, and creative direction by Hippy Bambino, aims to capture the vibrant energy of Botswana’s creative scene.

Hippy Bambino envisioned an album that not only stands out culturally but also makes history by bridging gaps within the industry. The project seeks to dismantle cliques and foster collaboration between emerging and veteran artists, aiming for a competitive sound capable of breaking international barriers. Featuring contributions from six local producers and 21 local artists, the album’s tracklist and promotional imagery have already generated significant anticipation.

Set to release on August 2nd, “The Republic of KARMA” is poised to make a significant impact on the music scene. In the lead-up to this launch, Hippy Bambino released the lead single “Summer Breeze,” featuring Lissie Rob, Chubbito, and Apollo D, produced by Quxncy and engineered by Fella, on June 28th, providing a tantalizing preview of what’s to come.

“The Republic of KARMA” stands as a testament to the vibrant synergy between music and fashion in Africa. By uniting local talent and fostering collaboration across creative disciplines, Hippy Bambino and his team are not only setting a new standard for artistic expression but also paving the way for a more integrated and dynamic cultural landscape. As the project prepares to make its debut, it promises to leave an indelible mark on the industry, inspiring future generations of artists to explore and celebrate the powerful connection between music and fashion.
