Africa showed up en masse for the 2023 edition of the BET Awards, one of the biggest platforms in black entertainment. A host of African acts were nominated for several categories and one of them, Nigeria’s very own ‘African Giant,’ Burna Boy, made history.
Although the Mzansi artists all lost in their categories, Nigeria and Cameroon had their representatives take home plaques as Burna Boy and Libianca each won in their respective categories.
During the Award show, hosted in the early morning of June 26, 2023 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, Burna Boy won his fourth BET Best International Act Award after previously snatching the award consecutively from 2019 to 2021.
The Best Collaboration Award went to Future and Drake for their song, ‘Wait For You’ featuring Nigerian singer, Tems.
‘People’ crooner and Cameroon breakout star, Libianca scooped the VIEWER’S CHOICE: BEST INTERNATIONAL ACT award in a very competitive category against names such as Nigeria’s Asake, UK girl group Flo, Maureen and Werenoi from France, Camidoh from Ghana, and South Africa’s Pabi Cooper.
