It’s a sad day in South African Hip Hop as we learn of the passing of one of the country’s music pioneers, Kiernan Forbes, known to many as AKA.
It’s learnt that the rapper had gone down to Durban for a show he was booked at and went to dine at a restaurant later that evening with some friends. Upon leaving the establishment, Forbes was seen by onlookers and CCTV footage walking across the street to his car but was met with bullets that ultimately ended his life.
Another tragic turn to this was the revelation of another casualty, Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, a well-known figure in South African music and entertainment. It appears that Tibz was caught in the crossfire where he too lost his life.
The gunmen fled the scene shortly after, leaving onlookers with the shocking realization that one of the country’s biggest rappers and entertainers had just been gunned down right in front of them.
While police and paramedics were soon dispatched to secure the scene, it was unfortunately too late so save either one of the men, who sadly succumbed to their injuries. The news reached social media in an instant, with many fans and industry mates expressing their shock and disbelief over the news.
The rapper’s parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, shared a statement on his social media pages confirming his death and showing appreciation for the support they’ve received. The family went on to ask for privacy as they process and deal with the tragic news of their son’s passing.
We’re told investigations are underway as the Durban police department handles two cases of murder.
As we know, AKA was in the process of releasing an album, Mass Country, expected to come out later in February 2023. We will keep you updated on any developments. Our hearts go out to his loved ones and the entire Hip Hop fraternity during this difficult time.
Long live, Supa Mega, live long.
